Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute: Shoes

By BarbaraAnne:

Flipping through the shoe database of the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute, I came across an unexpected similarity. Proportion united two pairs of shoes, made 250 years apart.

In 1700, French ateliers embroidered this pair of ladies’ leather shoes with silk thread in a masterful floral design. Points were at the toe and heel.

In 1950, Salvatore Ferragamo designed these purple suede shoes, also with a medium-sized heel. Influenced by Italian Renaissance men’s fashion, he put a pointy shape near the ankle and lined it with gold kid leather. I just felt a serendipitous connection. Do you?
