I feel you on the impulsive family bit!  My sis in law who lives about 12 hours away, is coming in for a quick visit.  Only problem is we have friends from out of town who were supposed to be staying here the same day.     It sounds like you handled your MIL with grace and respect though, sometimes it's hard when people do crazy things like showing up a day early unexpectedly!
