Scrunchies, Fashion Do or Don't?
Aug 20th, 2008 at 4:26pm

I used to use scrunchies as a kid putting them over my ponytail holders because they looked better. I stopped using them mainly because they were all falling apart. I've read, in a magazine, that scrunchies are considered a fashion don't and they are best left worn around the house. I've been thinking of getting scrunchies again, really nice ones, velvet or the like. But I wonder if they really are "out" so I thought I would first ask the ever fabulous ladies on LL Wink as to whether or not they consider scrunchies a fashion don't and have they ever worn them in public, over the age of 13. Thanks everyone!  Cool

Well, I'm 13 right now and I used to wear scrunchies alot before my I chopped my hair off a couple weeks ago. Now it can't fit. I don't know if you'll find this a very useful post since its coming from a 13 year old, but I would just tell you to wear whatever you want in your hair because its nobody's buisness to care what you put in it. It's your hair not theirs. Anyway, thats my 2 cents. Good luck with the whole scrunchie thing! Grin

I think what they are talking about are the really large scrunchies, I've noticed there are some that are much smaller but still have the fabric. If you don't have a ton of hair I say use the smaller ones if you can. To me it looks odd to see someone who doesn't have alot of hair and a big scrunchie, if you have the long hair I think you are probably safe with the larger ones.

Hmm...I'm no trendy, so I definitely can't make the call on what's "in" or "out" for the rest of the world. But a few years ago, I used to wear scrunchies every day to hold my bun in place...and I'm *ahem* well over the age of 13.  Grin
My mother is also in her 50's and wears scrunchies when she's out working our horses.

So, I mean, I kind of agree with Jilayne: your hair = your business, so whatever you put into it is up to you. Besides, if the rest of you looks fashionable and your scrunchie goes with your outfit, who's even going to notice?

I say wear what you are comfortable with.  If you like to wear your hair in a ponytail alot, scrunchies make sense - they are easier on your hair than just an elastic.  If you are concerned about making a fashion faux paux, then get scrunchies that are in basic neutral colors.

I don't care!  But I wear the very finelly knitted, tiny ones in black now.  Mainly because my hair is still relatively short but they're also more discrete  I don't care what others think though.  The kind that had the fabric around them are still fine in my book.  Even if they're large and quite visible.  I used to use them as bun covers when my hair was longer.  My MIL uses them over her buns with metal pins, clips etc. because I can't make her understand it's bad for her hair, but I haven't seen other women over 70 who wear any kind of scrunchie.

I finally bought some slim, black children ones like I've had in the past.  Yesterday I put my hair in a low ponytail.  Today I put it higher but I still have to use mousse to control the front a bit.  I smoothed the mousse out into the lenghts, lightly twisted and rolled the hair around itself and tucked the end into the scrunchy.  Put on knit hat, dropped kid off, came back and undid twist bun and now have the cutest little curl on the end of the ponytail. One little note I suppose I could add...scrunchies are fine for casual, daily activities.

However, in serious or high fashion environments, they are not appropriate.

I just image googled scrunchie and I due to ignorance I've been abusing the word scrunchie.  Sorry!

What I use today I guess should be defined as slim, black, jersey hair elastics.  You can buy them in other colors including neutral sand and browns, sizes and widths too if that's your thing.

I find the jersey elastics to be the gentlest on my hair and the ones that stay in place the best.  They loose their shape fast but they're cheap so it doesn't matter that much.

Has anyone tried to knit or sew their own scrunchies?

This: http://www.global-b2b-network.com/direct/dbimage/50198816/Hair_Elastics.jpg and packs in plastic tubes of this:  http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2207/2366686995_6f5bc99526.jpg?v=0 is all I can ever find these days. Sad  There used to be more variations of scrunchies widely available and why no keep something fashionable that doesn't damage your hair?  Oh yeah, I know why... Roll Eyes

While googling I saw many cute homemade scrunchies, both sewn and knitted and I actually think they're really cute and I see no reason why an adult can't use them.  Even though I can't knit or sew, I'm all for people showing off their craft skills and individuality. Smiley

I crocheted lots of scrunchies over the years.  I like to add beads to them to dress them up a bit.
