I don't have fine hair, and my hair doesn't get tangly- i guess i don't move in my sleep much- but i have long layers, that keep escaping from the braid, so...and you may find this sort of wierd but it does work. Ok, I use old knee high tights, or regular tights that i cut 4" longer than my hair length, then cut about 3" down the length. I then braid, tie and put the braid in the 'sock' then take the two pieces that were cut down the length, and wrap once, or twice, and tie it securley.

I hope my explanation is clear, and that it might help you

Sleep cap or sock I think I’d feel silly wearing either.

But those are both great ideas that I hadn’t thought of.

I’ll look around for something I can try tonight and let you know how it goes.

Last night I braided my hair and put a sock over it. Fiancé made such a face that I burst out laughing. After being made fun of for ten minutes I took the sock off and rolled the braid around it (Just as Bikerbraid suggested).

I have quite a bit of breakage around the front and sides because I wore my hair in a tight French twist every day for I don’t know how long, over five years away. So although those shorter hairs did not stay contained the rest did. No tangles today!

Angel Spun: My hair is tangling badly! I have been oiling frequently, washing my hair less, and cutting off any split ends I find, but it hasn’t seemed to help with the tangles.

I’ve been thinking about my Aunt’s hair lately, (she’s always kept it waist length and it’s even finer than mine) it is always silky and never tangled—makes me wonder what I’m doing wrong…

I talked to my Aunt about her hair/lack of tangles.

She thinks the difference lies in the fact that her hair is stick straight while mine has an ever so slight wave.

She said that when she was younger her hair tangled easily but that as she’s gotten older it is no longer a problem.

Other than that she had no advice for me. So I have none to share.

Ollave, wavy and curly hair tangles more easily 'cause the hairs wrap around each other with their pattern of wave/curl.  To keep the tangles out of my wavy hair I put it into two pigtails, braiding from the ears down.  My secret is mini scrunchies-they're smaller than full size so they don't pull out while I'm asleep.  You may want to end your braid higher up and oil just the ends below the scrunchie.

French braiding could be an option.  French braid is supposed to accommodate layers more easily than a regular braid. Also, if you haven't practiced French braiding, starting from night braids is a good idea- even less than perfect ones will do the job.

For my night braids (as well as for everything else), I don't use scrunchies but metal-free flat elastics. They hold really well even fine, slippery hair. I haven't noticed any damage for over a year of using them.
