Thanks from a newbie!

I use hairspray rarely if ever.  I have not been able to
find one without alcohol, and I feel hairspray is not
good for my hair.  However, I've heard some people
use it with no problem. I do use it very occasionally,
when I went to a wedding and wanted my hairstyle
to stay put.  But on a daily basis, I don't use it because
I'm afraid of damage.

I don't use hairspray - the alcohol is tooooo drying for my hair.  But when I need a little bit of holding power to keep those little fly-aways under control, I use aloe vera gel.  Works great!

Thanks Babyfine and Bikerbraid!

I only use it on occasion and will try the aloe vera instread.Wink
I've seen some recipes for homemade hairspray made with  oranges and the added alcohol was optional.
I think it will last in the 'fridge for a week without the alcohol.

I'm thinking of trying it- has anyone already or heard of it?

Thanks,
strawberryfine

I use hairspray sometimes if I'm going out in the evening and am wearing my hair down. I need something to encourage one or two specific locks to stay out of my face! Smiley

I always clarify the next day, I think hairspray feels disgusting.

I've started using hairspray again after not using it for years.  It's the only way I can get my baby fine hair to stay anyplace without making it look greasy.  I really don't think it's that damaging to the hair since the alcohol evaporates right away.  I worry more about my lungs and skin.

The alcohol in the hairspray can dry out the hair as it evaporates.  Also, the ingredients that hold the hair are basically a shellac that coats the hair, leaving it dry and dull.  This shellac can be difficult to remove from the hair if allowed to build up due to repeated use between shampooing.

I've found that aloe vera gel works just as well as hairspray, and with no damage.

But doesn't the aloe vera gel leave the hair looking oily?  My hair gets oily really fast as it is.  This is why I can't use gels, etc.

The aloe vera gel does not make your hair greasy at all.  How I use it, is to put some of the gel on my finger tips, then run my fingers over the hair that needs to stay put.  My hair might look a bit "wet" for a minute or so, depending on how much you used, but once it dries, you can't tell it is there at all.

The plainer the gel the better!  Use it right from the plant!

Some one else suggested the aloe vera gel to me to help keep my braids from getting so messy and protect them when I bike.  I tried it once and was convinced.

my hair is extremely thin. I work at hooters , and at hooter you MUST wear your hair down. nothing in it . not bobby pins nothing. HAIRSPRAY is my life saver. I buy mine at ULTA or other salon like places.yeah its not AWESOME for your hair. but i just spray in and wash out. i don't brush it with hairspray in. I just know it WORKS. it give me volume and keeps my ends from being all seperated and greesy.
