Do people tell you to cut it?
May 14th, 2004 at 3:02am

For the most part, I have a ton of compliments on my (below the bottom) hair.  BUT- there are always a few who say, 'when are yo gonna get cut?"  They seem to think that long hair is not fashionable- I think it is a classic and i love my long hair!  Does anyone else experience this, it is rude!

Yep, it is rude.  And yes, I've had people ask me when I am going to cut my hair.  Unfortunately, there are many people who feel it is the right to tell others how to live their lives.

If you are happy with your hair, enjoy it!

Yes,I can relate,I hear thar often.
Relatives are the worst, especially my *favourite* sister in law. Angry
It's incredibly rude,I would never comment on any ones appearance, with the exception of giving a compliment.

Sometimes I'm also tempted to give in and get a 'sporty' short cut-but then I think how much *I * enjoy my length, and the moment passes Grin

I don't know why people do that.  I guess it is either jealousy or simply because they don't like anything unusual.  I get a ton of compliments from little girls!  Isn't that cute?    i bet you ladies do too.

I get many comments from children and men.  Only a few from women.  Jealousy could most certainly be a factor.  8)

i think most of the time it is because people don't like what is unusual. i'm what most would consider a "goth" and because i wear slightly eccentric clothing (none of that pvc, bondage stuff...im a velvet and lace kinda gal  Smiley ) i get the RUDEST comments and quite frankly...abuse. they sometimes throw my hair into the mix..."errrrrr its HORRIBLE!....get a haircut!..." etc etc and so on. even though my hair is lovely (tooting my own horn  Grin  Roll Eyes ). i really dont understand society sometimes!!!

I actually think some people (probably just women) just think it's ugly. Like my sister...but she can never compliment me on anything.  Roll Eyes

My stepsister actually complimented my on my updo today (thanks to leia for posting a link to instructions for her swirly bun!Smiley), which was a surprise. She said to my sister, "hey, doesn't her hair look cool?" Of course my sister didn't say anything. I don't know why it disgusts her so much. It's just hair; it's not like I'm walking around in my underwear or anything. But then, I don't have much to say about her trend-following fashion sense either, so I guess we're even.

One of my friends used to have lovely, think blonde BSL hair, & recently cut it to above her shoulders. Even though it doesn't look nearly as lovely, I made still made a point to compliment her, because it did look cute with her round face. If I just got a cut I really liked, I wouldn't want people saying, "Omigosh, how horrible! I can't believe you cut it!" (not that I'd ever ever cut it...) It's just negative attention, and a lot of people seem to forget that it works both ways.

You know it's funny that you say that because my mom likes to change her hair color a lot .  No matter what, as soon as she changes it everyone  says they "liked it better before."  Yet "before" they never complimented her on it!  I think all different hairstyles are nice, it just depends on the person.  I don't know why people are so critical anyway.  Some ladies have nice long hair and some have nice short hair.  People should just respect one another's differences, you know?    Wink

I usually don't get comments on cutting my hair because I live in a place where most women have long hair. A few days ago, though, I left my hair down and one of my best friends said it was looking so long and asked when I was going to cut it. I told him that I had been growing it purposely and that I cut it myself, but I don't think he understood the word "trim" as opposed to "cut." However, he did make it a point to say that it was looking lovely just the way it was  Wink.

When I leave my hair down I get a lot of compliments. Only a couple of times I've overheard girls saying "Leia is so out of fashion! She should get her hair cut!" That doesn't really leave an impression on me, though. I'm not usually a follower of fashion trends - I have my own style and my own hair. I do what suits ME, and most people appreciate that. Jealousy is a terrible thing, and I try not to let it affect me. Just know that your hair is beautiful and it is YOUR choice whether or not you keep it long!  Grin

Oh! I love the way you said that. Amen.

Men tell me my hair is "sexy and gorgeous" and they "like it better this way" while my lady friends comment on how strange it is... they've known the short-haired Anais for years and still haven't adjusted to the new me. That's what I get for being away from civilization for too long.

I quite often have women tell me to cut my hair - never men.  In fact, I had a man tell me that he respected me for never cutting my hair.  I thought that was nice.  My pet peeve is when I am told I should cut my hair and donate it to "Locks of love".  People think it is a charity that gives wigs to children with cancer, but in fact, they sell the wigs and have a strange way of choosing those who get the wigs.  I have also had people talk about my hair to someone else as if I couldn't hear them. LOL Tongue

I feel bad for all you that get dirty comments like that! I don't think I have ever had someone make a nasty comment about my hair! I actually use cutting my hair as a threat... and people take it that way! Even my Aunt who hates the way I dress has never insulted my hair. People always seem to *need* to play with it when I wear it down. My sister is the worst offender, but I kinda like having my hair braided. I'm almost 20 and have been dating my *first* boyfriend for almost 3 years and my sister already thinks she is making my wedding dress and doing my hair! I sometimes find it amusing that people fawn over my hair. It's not very long anymore. Well, I consider it short, for me anyway. Its about halfway down my back. I can't wait for it to be hip-length again. If someone tells you to cut your hair, tell them you cut it every day, but it just grows back over night. Some people may actually believe you. Pity them! LOL.
