Luc's braids
May 30th, 2008 at 2:02pm

Hi everyone!

After reading all the boards, and links to other sites, I decided to try some different types of braids.

My crown braid kinda worked, but I think my layers were working against me.

...

I have one side that looked pretty good, and the little fans of ends could have been pinned down, but I was going to bed....

...

...

The part on my head was left over from having my sides braided all day.   Smiley

Well, after pulling that off last night, I couldn't hardly just not do my hair today.

So I pulled my sides into lace braids, and connected the tails.

...

(Can you tell I don't like flashes?  Wink)

Just thought I would share.

Please tell me what you think, or if you have any suggestions as to how I could have made these turn out better.

Your braids look wonderful!!! Cheesy

Layers are always tough with braids.  About the best you can do is either braid your hair when it is damp or hide the part of the braid that has the layers.  Aloe vera gel will also help keep the ends under control better.

Good job!

Thank you so much!

For the side braids and lace braids, it's basically the same thing.  I started doing my hair like this because I didn't like all of my hair braided, or the "lump" I would get on the top of my head from a single braid.   Smiley

Part hair on top of head down the center.  Then put tip of comb at top of crown of head at the end of the part you just drew.  Draw the comb down to just behind the ear.  Put a loose tie or clip on that section.  Do the same to the other side.
You should now have each "side" of your head in two clips.  Then, I gently braid the length in the back to keep it out of my way and from snagging while I braid the sides.

For the lace braid, begin a French braid close to the hair line in the front, add sections to the braid only on the "outside" pieces.  (You can also do a basic French braid here, and add pieces to both sides of the braid.)  Once all the loose hair is braided, continue basic braid to end (or in my case - end of layers!) and secure with hair-safe band.

Repeat on other side.  You should now have two side braids with long tails, and the back in a long basic braid.

Pull the ends of the two braids together, remove the two bands from the braids with one hand while holding them together with the other hand.  Then secure both tails into a single hair safe band.

Remove large basic braid band from rest of hair.

Lately, I've been applying conditioner to the hair before I braid it to up the shine and sleek look.

Hope this helps!!  Let me know if it doesn't, and I'll try posting some picture instructions.

Here are a couple views of what I tried this morning.  It's a slight variation on what I normally do to pull mine back:

                                 ...                                         ...

The side little braids are lace braids that have their tails linked.  Then I basic braided the bottom to hide that tie.  I rubbed fortifier in the pieces when I started them, and a little aloe vera gel as I worked my way down the braid.  I think I need to braid it a little tighter next time, but this was the first attempt at this variation.

Beautiful!  I want to learn to do braids like that when my hair gets long enough because they would go well with all the vintage styles I like.  I know my maternal grandmother did similar styles in the 40s and 50s.  Not everyone had a poodle!

They aren't braids, but remember those sponge rollers I bought?  I finally saved them off of my camera.
I couldn't get the pics to show up, so here's a link:

I also took a new pic of my length yesterday.  I'm not real happy with the pic, so I'm going to try to have someone else take one.  But here it is:

Whoa, those are some serious curls!
And your hair certainly seems to be getting longer. Keep up the good work!

Love those curls!  They look so soft and shiny.  Your length is looking good too!
