White stripe
Apr 7th, 2008 at 10:12pm

Alright, genetics time! I have always had a "white" stripe in my hair (it's actually platinum, not white). In high school, I knew two other women who had this: one, a teacher, had the stripe on top of her brow at her part, like mine, and the other, a student, had it in the back. It was then that I learned that this was a genetic trait, sometimes accompanied by two differently colored eyes, which none of us had. I mentioned this to my mom, and to my suprise, she replied "That makes sense! My mother had a white stripe in her hair. I had forgotten that."
But! I can't find any info online about this anywhere? Any help?

Hmmm.  I knew a guy that had a spot on the back of his head.  It always reminded me of a spotted faun.

I don't have any ideas about how to look it up though.

Good Luck!

I've found a few things that kinda explain it. There's a genetic disorder called Waardenburg syndrom, but it's really rare, so it's unlikely that I would have known those other two women with it (it occurs in about 1 in every 42,000 people). One of the symptoms is blue eyes, and both myself and my grandma have blue eyes, but we are a German/Dutch family, so I can't bench too much on that. One of the most prominent symtoms is hearing loss, which I don't have, and I don't think any other the other did either.
Hm...

I know someone who has this. I think it is called "Vitiligo". Here a bit I found online:

"Vitiligo of the scalp usually appears as a localized patch of white or gray hair, but total depigmentation of all scalp hair may occur."

That could bit it... but from what I am seeing vitiligo is partial albinism, and my skin doesn't have a pigment loss, just the hair. Although my friend's cousin has vitiligo and her abdomen has splotches of white (and I mean WHITE!) all over it.
Thanks!
