Safe to Dye Hair?
Nov 23rd, 2007 at 7:01am

Hey! I've been thinking about dying my hair blue, or some of it blue wit black. I was curious.. is it bad for the hair to dye it? And because I have dark brown hair, will it have to be bleached? I've heard that the colour will never return after bleached, but thats another thing I'm afraid of... little help?  Cry

Permanent hair dyes open up the hair shaft so the color can get in.  This permanently damages the hair.  Bleaching the hair is even more damaging and is permanent.

As I understand how the fashion colors are added to hair - they first strip the hair of its natural color, then add the fashion color.  This is a permanent process that is not easily reversed other than to cut it off after growing it out.

Personally, I will not color my hair, but that is because of its length.  If you are not trying to grow long hair, then the risks and damage might be managable.

Technically, yes, colouring hair is dangerous. Especially if you're going for unnatural colours.

BB has it right. For an unnatural colour to have maximum effect, hair must be bleached beforehand. This is extremely damaging. There's a reason why unnaturally coloured hair (blue, bright pink, etc. etc.) does not look healthy - it isn't!

The only answer to "fixing" bleached hair is either dying it back to its natural colour or just growing it out.

And yes, since your hair is dark, it would have to be bleached first in order for the blue to show. Actually, hair of any colour must be bleached first for an unnatural colour to work.

If you are trying to grow long hair, this process is not a good idea.
