Swimming with long hair
May 31st, 2007 at 9:08am

Summer is here in the northern hemisphere and thoughts turn to enjoying the outdoors and the water.  Swimming with long hair can present some special challenges, but with a little preparation you can enjoy your time in the water and not worry about damaging your beautiful locks.

Hair needs moisture and will absorb water when immersed.  If the hair is already saturated with water/moisture, it will not absorb more.  With this in mind, if you are going to be swimming in salt water, or chemically treated pools, it is important to get your hair saturated BEFORE entering the water.  You can do this by rinsing your hair with fresh water as a minimum.  If you will be swimming or in the water for more than a quick dip, you can futher protect your hair by oiling your hair or conditioning your hair and leaving the conditioner on the hair (note:  if swimming in a pool - the management may not appreciate the conditioner in the pool - wearing a cap or putting your hair in a plastic bag will prevent the conditioner from clogging up their filter systems).

I've always found my hair is easiest to maintain in the water when I put it in braids, then bun the braid(s).  A swim cap or plastic baggy secured over the bun can help keep the hair from absorbing the "nasty" water and keeping the "good" water/moisture in the hair.

A final rinse with fresh water after you have exited the water will also help in removing any residual chemicals or salt water and help keep your hair from drying out.

Enjoy your summer and the water!
