Observed hair horrors

I'm just wondering what hair horror stories you know.  I'm sure we've all seen hair that has been fried via chemical processing, etc. but what other horrors have you seen or heard?

I'll start with a mild instance..... the president of my company has fairly short, curly hair.  He has never used shampoo on it (and conditioner would be unheard of!).  He figures the deodorant bar soap he uses on his body is good enough for his hair!  And then he wonders why his scalp is always itchy!!  Shocked  I've tried to suggest other options - including giving him a shampoo bar for him to try.  But he will have nothing to do with it.  Oh well..... I guess my pet peeves are the one inch curly perm ladies.  They go to the hair dresser every week or two to keep it in shape... shape!?!  Two of my best friends have hair like this and they keep telling me how great it is.  Sorry, I don't think it is the least bit feminine.  I'd rather have striped, split, classic length hair (lol, rainbow)  The point is, I guess, everyone has his/her own tastes about what looks good.  So, I keep my opinions to myself.

Yeah, I don't like the short curly perms either. Although, I'm not sure if I'll still want longer hair when I'm older but, if not I promise not to go short and curly Wink

Anyway, I've had tons of hair horrors myself.  The last one was only a few years ago.  I'd asked my sister who's had extensive cosmetology training, to put a chemical relaxer (straightner) in my hair.  It's actually a fairly easy process but somehow she screwed it up.  I don't remember what she did, but she skipped a step.  Afterwards, my hair had NO elasticity and would come out just from my touching it.  I was so distraught.  I went to a salon the next day for any suggestions as to what I should do.  They told me the only thing I could do was cut all of my hair off and start over!!! Shocked  I figured NO WAY!!!  I was going to try any and everything I could think of on my own to save it and if I couldn't, then it would just have to fall out but there was no way I was cutting it.  I was extremely careful with it, and read somewhere that protein treatments and reconstructors can help strengthen and restore elasticity, so I tried it and it worked, I still have hair.  That wasn't the first time my sister did something horrible to my hair, but that time I learned my lesson, she hasn't touched my hair since.

I haven't seen the UK Dove ad.  A quick search didn't turn up anything but the American ads for various body types.  Wish I could see her.

There was a woman in the movie the Kama Sutra a Tale of Love who was older and also had really long, shiny, beautiful hair.  I was trying to find a still of her from the movie to post here but I can't find one.  I would love for my hair to look like that one day, but my hair isn't able to produce that type of shine. Cry

My mother used to iron her waist-length hair in the '60's. I don't mean with the modern flat irons that they have now. Back then, they used actual clothing irons!!
Shocked

I've seen people iron their hair like that on television.  Did your mother do that often?  I'm just wondering because you mentioned she had waist long hair, I can't imagine it growing that long if that was something she did regularly.

Yep, she did it often. I'm guessing every day. I guess they didn't know how awful it was for hair back then.  Shocked

Her hair was wast-length from high school up until shortly after I was born.  Embarrassed  It's shoulder-length now, but she still loves to torture it via the dye & fry methods. hehe

My nani's hair used to be chin length and dyed her natural very dark brown.  Then when she had chemo it fell out and she let it grow back in salt and pepper, but keeps it about an inch and a half long.  It's naturally curly, but if you don't know that she looks like one of the old-short-perm ladies.  However, since her face is very round it actually looks good on her, and I'm not going to force her to grow it out.

HOWEVER, my aunt has hair that is way curlier than mine, but she straightens it every day and never moisturizes, so it feels like straw.  She has olive skin and green eyes, but 'highlights' (meaning gets it professionally streaked) her naturally dark hair with golden brown.  It feels like straw and I wish she would stop, but she says this is what people are used to on her so she won't stop.

Funny--most of the hairdressers I've seen have awful hair.  A lady I saw today at Quiznos had short hair plastered to her scalp in three different colors (red, platinum, black), a headband and a fan of hair stuck straight up in front of it.  I've seen this look on a lot of hairdressers, but nowhere else.  WTF?

My hairdresser has beautiful hair. But what is with the books that they have for you to look through? OMG, I don't think any of those wacky styles are the least bit appealing or fashionable. They look horrible!

That's good, L&Lx3!  I wouldn't go to a hairdresser with bad hair.  Maybe that's why I don't go very often...

And LOL, some of the books I've seen in there are very old, with 70's or 80's styles in them.
