Bichons - The Perfect Breed?
May 18th, 2006 at 5:34pm

Bichon Frise. Small fluffy dogs that are commonly referred to as "walking stuffed animals," almost unbearably cute. Perennial favorites at national dog shows and fabulous pets that don't shed *at all*. A French breed, it is known for its pristine white coat, manicured appearance, and are even known to take pride in their "do" when freshly groomed.

This is what a bichon is SUPPOSED  to look like:

...

But does my angel, my tiny Petunia, my sweet little baby, look like this?

Of course not. Or as the French would say, au contraire.

<sigh>

THIS is MY bichon:

...

Mud?  What mud?  There's mud?

Eyup.  She's mine.

<more sighing>

I was partial to big dogs until I got bichons... greyhounds to be exact.  I was a rescue coordinator for *years.*  We lost both our greyhounds last year, within about six months of each other. Now I am a total convert to bichons, much easier to clean, much easier to clean up AFTER, and a lot more room in the bed, LOL!

I've always only had large breed dogs.  We never allowed them on the bed (or furniture).  I have a hard enough time sharing the bed with hubby sometimes!  8)

Just curious - how much grooming does a bichon take?  (Excluding the mud baths).  Do they need to be trimmed regularly to keep that "stuffed animal" look?

Yeah, when we had the two greyhounds and two cats, there were 20 legs in our bed and back then we only had a queen! :x

LOL!

Yes,BB I take my bichon to the groomers every month.  I can clean her eyes,ears,brush and bathe her myself,but as far as the clippers are concerned,I leave that to the groomer!!!  My bichon is ultra tiny,not the normal size of about 16 inches.  She's about 11-12 pounds(pudge that she is) and about 14 inches from neck to tail so I can fit her either in the sink or the tub.  She actually shows me which one she prefers,too!!  lol
When you think of a cotton ball that's fluffy;that's a bichon!!(with coal black eyes that look like they are lined with black eyeliner!)

I have 'em groomed every 2 or 3 months.  I actually have a groomer who comes to me, he parks his fancy grooming trailor in the driveway and does his stuff. I love that, I just hand dirty, shaggy puppies to him, go back to work, and before you know it I have what look like brand new dogs, LOL!

Our biggest one (Magnolia) weighs almost 11 lbs, but Petunia only weighs 7.5 lbs!  They are both full grown too, and littermates.  My little Petunia blossom was the runtlet.

If I wasn't dealing with the same groomer for 10 years,I'd love to have the groomer with the RV come here and presto chango brand new looking pup!!  All I have to say to my Shasta is "we're going to see Trudy" and that's it,the tail is whipping a mile a minute and the little body is shaking with the happy dance!! Grin
