Beautifying Hubby!
Nov 14th, 2005 at 1:36pm

I couldn't take it anymore, watching the way my husband cares for his hair, the way he washes it (by wash, I mean scour), the way he combs it (and by comb, I mean rake)...such abuse!  We were looking back thru pictures, and we both nearly fell over when we came across a photo of him with nearly waist-length hair, and couldn't understand what had happened over the years to transform that wonderful mane into shoulder blade length hair, only about half as thick, with no major hair cuts having taken place.  Well, I have a pretty good idea what happened, after seeing his daily 'torture routine' to his hair...so, I decided to step in, and take matters into my own hands...literally.  I took him into my shower, and I washed his hair for him.  Normally, he fills the palm of his hand up with shampoo till it's overflowing, piles his hair up on top of his head, and swirls the shampoo in till it's completely lathered and bird-nest-looking.  I combed his hair while still dry, before getting in the shower, had him wet it, and massaged a bit of shampoo into his scalp and let him rinse.  I then did and ACV rinse on him (giggle- he was like "now I'm gonna smell like a g-d*mn salad bar!"), and then worked a bit of conditioner in from the ears down.  He would also do a "hair pile" for this part, too.  NO MORE HAIRPILES!  Then had him rinse.  After the shower he grabbed a fine-tooth comb and was about to start from the roots down...well, I scared the bejeezus out of him when I shouted "NO!"...he dropped the comb and jumped.  I combed it for him from the bottom up, and explained that you never detangle from the roots down...NEVER!  Then, as an added bonus, I used my newfound favorite face astringent (thanks 13bodies!) with the aloe, witch hazel, and tea tree oil on him.  He responded with "what are you DOING to me?"  I just kept telling him not to worry, it was for his own good.  So now I showed him how to do it right, or at least better, let's just see if he keeps up with it.  Could LL change my husbands ways w/o him even knowing about it??  We shall see... <place evil laugh in here>

My hubby has business cut Asian hair, so not much can be done with that but I did get him to change to Avalon Organics shampoo.  My hubby's beautification has come in the form of skin care.  He's almost 40 and gets terribly clogged pores and flakey skin.  So!  First I introduced him to facial scrub Smiley  then to moisturizer and washing his face with more than water.  He doesn't scrub often enough (I remind him now and then) but his skin in much improved.  Secretly, I hope this clues him in to how nice and important skin care is.  I hope that realization will lead him to not complaining when I get a facial and body wrap (like I did last Friday Smiley) ) and spend money on product.

WOW! that is torture Shocked

It's great that you and your hubby can start to take care of your hair together Cheesy and he will notice a big difference soon- though he may not admit it- depends on how he feels about doing 'girl stuff"

Maggie You go girl!  Grin You can get him to do it right!! Men like to be pampered.  Even the toughest guy can enjoy having his hair done!  My hubby shaves his head and was washing it with soap!  Yikes! So now he's using my Natures Gate and he does not have a dry scaly scalp.

Sakina My hubby loves a facial.  Before we were dating he would sneak over to my house and get one done!  He still loves them along with a scalp massage.  I learned a middle eastern style head massage and he begs for it! Roll Eyes

Maggie:  good job!  Let us know if he keeps up a better routine for his hair.

My hubby has next to NO hair, so there is not much I can do to help him in the hair care area.  I did introduce him to facial moisturizers however - he uses more than I do now!

He sat in his chair last night and I noticed that he kept feeling his hair, so I asked him if he noticed any difference...he just said that it's the best that his hair has felt in a long time.  He couldn't keep his hands off it!  So I think that he will keep up with the routine, and maybe someday we'll see that waist length hair again....we'll see!

Chalk one up for LL!   ...

LOL Maggie....your husband sure sounds like a riot! Hopefully he will take your instructions to heart...or at least ask you to show him again.

I was horrified the first time I watched my boyfriend wash his own hair. He scrubs the bejeezes out of it with Herbal Essences (yes, he even scrubs conditioner into his hair!). After forming it all into a sudsy mohawk, he stands directly under very warm water (ugh!) and lets it all fall down around his head and in front of his face, instead of down the back. As to the warm water thing, he insists upon it: "It kills germs!"

After this, he scrubs his hair dry with a towel and then rips a cheap, store-bought, plastic comb through it. You can hear it tear and snap - oh the humanity!

He also smokes, and occasionally drinks, and has had quite the history of drug use in the not-so-distant past. Ahem.

I have tried to educate him on the finer points of hair care (not to mention just taking better care of himself in general) but.....does he listen? *sigh* Does any man listen?

The sad part is he really wants to grow his hair out. But that won't be a very successful endeavour if he doesn't change his habits. *buries face in hands & prays for a miracle*
