Galadriel's Special Occassion Survey
Oct 20th, 2005 at 10:21am

This month's survey comes a bit late...but here it finally is! Party season is coming, so let's share our party hair secrets.

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?

My answers:

1. I haven't had formal events since I stopped going to a stylist. Maybe an elaborate bun or twist, decorated with pretty hairtoys.

2. I've worn buns with cheap sticks, but next time I might wear my hair down.

3. Hairsticks, clips, floating jewels...possibly all at once  Grin The only restriction is that I'm too paranoid to wear my expensive hairsticks in a bar.

4. I wear same toys, the difference is in the style itself.

5. I have a "sparkle" spray that looks like gold dust in hair. And if I really needed to, I could use mousse or hairspray to a formal updo. But I try to survive with aloe vera gel and Amish pins as far as possible.

6. Avoiding them is my primary strategy. If I can't avoid them and the occassion allows, I wear a scarf bun. If I can't do even that, I suffer and wash the hair right when I get home.

7. Aloe vera gel (in my handbag too!), Amish hair pins and hairspray if needed. I try to secure my hair with pins instead of "gluing" it in place with hairspray, and tame whispies with aloe vera gel.

8. No! I've had my share of stylists. But I'd love to have my hair braided by a professional braider. Unfortunately, none live here...

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?

Usually in a loose bun, and somethimes with a braided strand wraped around it. some flowers here and there.

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?

Down, with a few pins, hair jewelry to keep it off my face

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?

Clips with little diamonds(fake), flowers, and my new favorite hairsticks

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?

the whole thing really, and the toys are more...sparkly for special occassions

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?

not when i do it my self, but if i go to the stylist- it's hair spray but i ask that she doesn't use a lot.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?

I have allergies, so i either stay away if it's too much, or if it's only one or two people (that i know, and know that i have allergies) I start to cough really, REALLY loud so they stop (rude i know, but.... Grin)

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?

a little bit of gel on the parts i know will get messed up, and looking in a mirror as often as i can

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?

yes, a wedding, any style that will show off my length

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?
I don't differentiate between everyday wear and special occasion wear. Every day is a special occasion! Smiley

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?
probably loose.

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?
Mamacat sticks for a half-up clover bun, or loose

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?
maybe the clover bun.

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?
none, or the usual Giovanni leave-in.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?
my boyfriend smokes, and I make him go outside. Other people I can't have much influence over.

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?
don't care much Smiley If it comes loose then I let it loose.

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?
I don't believe a professional can do my hair better than the actual owner of the hair! Grin

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?
I like old-fashioned updo's. Victorian/Gibson styles, mostly.

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?
It depends on how much time I have left after getting dressed, putting on makeup and jewelry, etc. It also depends on what my hair is (and isn't) willing to do that night. I might put it up with pretty hair toys...or I might just part it on the side and leave it down. My hair is very straight and sleek, and has a natural side part. So it works.

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?
The ones that I make myself. They usually start out as ordinary hairties, clips, etc. but I'll decorate them "tragically" with black or "dried" silk flowers, dark ribbons, strips of black lace, etc.

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?
There's a world of difference. My casual "style" is just to tie my hair back with a scrunchie to get it out of the way. For special occasions, there's some actual thought and effort (and often money) that goes into it. The more formal the occasion, the more complex the style.

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?
Parties and special occasions are the rare instances when I regretfully must use a styling product. My drug of choice is Pantene's Flexible Hold Classic Hairspray.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?
Man...I could write you a book on dealing with smokers - I live with one!  Angry Blasphemy, I know, considering I have always opposed smoking and have myself led a very clean life. My boyfriend never smokes in our apartment and never brings it around me, but that doesn't spare me entirely.
Everyone he knows smokes as well, so when they light up, I usually flee the scene. No one's company is worth putting myself in harm's way.
As for my bf, he's quitting (or so he says).  Undecided

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?
My hairspray usually does the trick. If I have my hair styled professionally (heaven forbid!), it usually lasts all night.

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?
I actually have a wedding to attend this Saturday for which I plan to have my hair professionally styled. My dress is in the style of the later 19th century...so you can bet that my hairstyle will match!  Wink

Hmm, since it's only been a few months I've been experimenting with updos, most of these don't apply to me.  Before, I wore it down, no products.

Since holidays are coming up and my family hasn't seen me in my buns and sticks yet, I'll probably do one of my daily buns.  In that case, the style will last as long as usual, and I won't need styling products as usual.

As far as people smoking, I just try to avoid them.  It's probably easier to do in California since we have smoking laws.  Usually I run into a smoker on the sidewalk, and I simply slow down or speed up.

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?
I like to show off my curls, so an updo is my favorite.

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out? I like doing braids and then rapping them around in a bun or letting them hang in cool looking ways .

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories? small hair clips and BOBBY PINS!!

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles? I usually wear my hair down and not really styled. For special occations, I put more effort into my hair.

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products? I use gel and mousse (not at the same time) to prevent frizzies and to help the hair hold its shape, but not to shalack it down.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke? I don't go places were people would be smoking.

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening? Bring bobby pins and hope for the best.

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have? I would have a professional do my hair for my wedding. Then I don't need to stress and it's a fun outing to pamper myself with. I would want it down, but styled in such a way that my curls are pretty and attractive.

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?
I like to put braids in my hair with ribbons or beads, those craft pearls-on-a-string come in many colors and are great for this!

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?
Usually down, or with just the top part pulled back to keep it out of my face.

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?
Beads, ribbons, rhinestone clips, my ebony hairsticks.

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?
I spend a lot longer on my hair to do something 'special' because I usually wind up redoing it several times.   I get confused looking in the mirror  Embarrassed (...which way does my left hand go now?!?) but I need to in order to make sure it all comes out even!

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?
Sometimes I use a little hairspray.  I am not sure which I will use next time, I have not used any in a while but I like Paul Mitchell's Freeze and Shine.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?
All of my friends know that smoke makes me ill and try to stay downwind.  If the smell of smoke gets in my hair, it takes every ounce of my willpower not to race straight home to the shower.  I absolutely despise it when odors other than shampoo or my Herbal Essence conditioner get into my hair.

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?
A little hairspray and liberal distribution of bobby pins.

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?
I would just like to have a professional braider do something really really nifty with my hair some time.

1. How do you like to wear your hair to formal special occassions?  I like wearing a Modified Gibson.  It looks dressy and holds well.

2. And how would you wear your hair to less formal occassions like parties or a night out?  It depends.  Anything from a simple bun to the M.G.

3. What are your favorite party hair accessories?  Hairsticks!  Shiny, sparkly hairsticks with little rubber bands on them so no-one can pull them out without my knowledge.   8)

4. What is the main difference between your casual and special occassion styles?  Not a whole lot, really.

5. Do you use any products to achieve a party look? If yes, what products?  I'll use some hairspray to keep the front of my hair behaving; I usually don't bother.

6. How do you deal with people who smoke and the smell of smoke?  Avoidance.  Smoke triggers my migraines.

7.How do you make your hairstyle last the whole evening?  Most of my updos last without any problems.  There's always the occasional bad hair day or new hairstyle failure, but I stick with a tried-and-true for special occasions so I don't fiddle with my hair the whole time.

8. Is there any special occassion for which you'd like to have your hair styled by a professional? If yes, what occassion and what kind of style would you have?  I'd like to have a crown braid for any occasion.  I've tried to do one on myself without success.  Yet.
