going to NYC in 3 weeks: shopping list!
Oct 8th, 2005 at 10:13pm

i am not all that familiar with american shops/supermarkets so i am asking you. just tell me what you think i should check out when it comes to conditioners or hair toys (both can be expensive, as a matter of fact i am really hoping to run into some neat ficcare to try out the maximus type since the bird beak deffo hates my hair).

just called the hotel for confirmation, good lord they understood me - was a little nervous about that  Grin
so i won't be homeless in NYC  8)

PS: the only huge store i remember is macy's, but apparently they don't have ficcares boohoo.

Hey, Styg!  How exciting NYC!  I've been a couple of times, but never for hairtoy shopping.  Congratulations on your conversation w/the hotel person.  I get really nervous anytime I try speaking Indonesian to anyone who's a native speaker.

Have a safe trip and a great visit.  Sorry I don't have any recommendations for you.

I've never seen Ficcare clips in person, but I haven't really looked either.  I hear that Nordstrom might have them.  On the Ficcare website, there is a phone number - maybe you can call and ask what stores carry them:

Have a good trip - it sounds like it will be fun!  I'd love to go to NYC some day.

LOL, you mean you understood them ???  NYC New Yorkers have a very distinctive dialect (well, many parts of the USA do) that can be rather difficult to follow at times Wink
Hope you have a great time.  I, too, am an unbelievably dry fount of wisdom about NYC Tongue

Most Nordstroms do carry Ficcares, and they also carry Mei Fa hairsticks (the ones with the little "hips" on them)

You might want to look around in natural stores like Whole Foods (they have one in Union Square), where you might be able to find things like Giovanni (LUST!!!) and similarly cool organic stuff like Avalon, Shikai, that kind of stuff. They have it at my local grocer's and it's not even a completely organic shop.

random thoughts:

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge!!

I don't know if they still allow people inside the Statue of Liberty but if they still, do, there are stairs all the way to the crown.

bring a raincoat because NYC rain is really bizarre and it rains sideways sometimes.

You can't go wrong with the food there, everything is good.

Have fun Styg!!!

if we have time for the bridge i'll do that, but i already visited the statue of liberty, which was kinda a waste of time considering i was only three days in NYC last time i went. taking the boat seemed to take ages, and there was really too many people to my taste, so didn't enter the statue. we europeans hate queueing, especially in a burning july sun!! i remember some people in our group went queueing early in the morning for the white house. when they heard we were 30 they nicely shut the line in front of them. they were just able to get like 4 ticks ... amazing how americans stay calm in such situations he he. or like when openair concerts are canceled because there's two drops of rain: no protest at all ... tsssssssssssssssssssssssssss
ok, i am little of topic there.
Roll Eyes

i am rather lucky i visited all the big attractions the other time. this time we really go mainly for galleries and well, a gig.  8)

Hey styg, I live in NYC. firts of all you need to go to Lombardi's becaus ethat's teh first pizzaria in America (and teh first to make the type of pizza americans eat). You also have to go to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens, and generally hang out around Park Slope. When you're in Manhattan , check out the village/ Grenwich village. Alot fo nice stores and curio shops there and over all a nice atmospehere. Speaking fo teh village near west broudawayin soho, there will be a store called Ricky's. There you'll fins Nature's Gate products and Jasons shampoos and condiotionrs for 5 and 6 dollars. You must also go to Whole Foods for natural and organic food (alot of variety, plsu they ahve pre prepared food like Indian cuisine). Whole foods alos has a section dowstairs with natural body products like burts bees and essntal oils. I foind my rose water there. You shoudl also try (across form whole foods and still in teh village) the Farmers Market (and you may also like East Village). After that try Chelsea and look at the vintage stores on 23rd street (I got a great victorian costume there for halloween with crenolin.) Also you may want to see . You migth also wnat to take New York Water way ferry at the chealsea docks and tshi will show you manhattan from the water and the palisades park and cna take you to different areas upstate (I recommend sleepyhollow tour). You may also wnat to see the medieval abbey museum all the way uptown.

Oh yes and Anias is right..bring a raincoat and sweaters and a coat in general. Also walk ove rteh Boorklyn bridge and ask about the famosu ice cream palor on teh brooklyn side that serves "the worlds purest vanilla ice cream." I hav't tried it yet. I am a Brooklynite myself, but moved away a  while back.
Don't forget the botanic gardens and park slope Sad>

Have a fantastic time styg, and I'm sure as you wander around shopping you will find tons of hair items that you will fall in love with, you'll probably find them in the most unexpected places, so don't stress!  I have been to NYC a few times, but always on a bus trip/guided tour.  It's a good time, but too structured for me- but, considering the traffic there I much prefer the bus driver toting me around.  We too visited the Statue of Liberty, and it was awe-striking to look at, I would never go inside again.  The stairs were so narrow and clausterphobic, and I remember that as you climb, the stairs are grated so that you can see thru them, and I am extremely terrified of heights, so as we got higher, my legs got weaker!  There was also a stinky, musty stench on the way up that sticks on my head, and once we finally got all the way up to the platform where you can look out, I stood with my back plastered-fast against a wall clutching on for dear life!  Not the place to go if you don't like heights!  So yes, she is amazing, but I'm content with viewing her from the safety of the ground, I feel no need to ever climb up and stand on her head again!  I also remember going into Sax Fifth Avenue, I remember seeing the cutest little belt with these natural looking stones all the way around it- they were just kind of tied together with some kind of roping.  I flipped the price tag & saw that it was $500 bucks, I then walked out...no shopping there for me!  I had a great time, though, and hope you will too.  It's just such a cool change of pace from the norm where I live, but at the end of the day, I'm always ready to go back home!

That sounds great!  Smiley I hope you have a wonderful time. Enjoy! (and I have to agree with your remarks about Europeans and standing in line. We are not very patient  Wink )

Maybe you can see one of the famous football games 8)

Yes Maggie, You'll find prices for accessories like that. But whats funny, is you have to really get a good look around the whole store because in one store there may be a 700 dollar item and in the same store a 20 dollar one and they both are very similiar.

Oh for shopping you must try Century 21. This si one of those stores where you'll find discounted tags on designer clothes and at the same time pretty expenisve stuff, so just really gte a good look around. Its rigth across from Ground Zero. Also, I recommend shopping at Macy's, just ask around, evryone knows where it is (except me I forgot the address).

I've never been to NYC, and i will NOT go there with my family, we'll probably get lost in 10 min flat Embarrassed

i went into the Sax Fifth Avenue we have here, with my mom, at first she was like this is such a nice store, but when she looked at the price, she was like "ummm... ya know this isn't so nice after all, i mean they have such bad quality clothes" Lips Sealed  Roll Eyes

Anyway have a wonderful time, and remember to take plenty of pics for us to see- maybe you can take pics of the long haired gods n' goddesses there.

Actaully, you can't really get lost at leats in Manhattan. It sourounded by water. If you walk to the east or west, you'll even tually hit (two miles diameter) the east rviver or hudson river. And people in New York have thistough ,rude image which is a lie. Anywhere you go there will be nice and mean people.  We're more than happy to help. And New York is the safest city(with low crime rates vs the population size)  so you might as well ask for help. Bring the family! If someone gets lost, you''ll find them, the authorities will help. No one's going to get hurt. Remember there are many many landmarks so you just tell you family to meet at one of these landmarks (ground zero seems to be popular  ???) if something happens and they can just ask around.
