How to get Tomatoes to turn red
Aug 24th, 2005 at 11:17am

Hi All,

This year in my garden I have grown tomatoes for the frist time.  Well there ready just green, and I noticed they starting to be nibbled at by animals so I picked a bunch.  I was wondering, how do I get them to go red in the house?  Put them in the window maybe or in a paperbag?  Help... Tongue

Here's a site with info on ripening tomatoes and peppers.

Hope this helps!

Ooh thanks for the link!  I had the same problem earlier this year.  Mice ate the tomatoes (well, the ONE tomato) and my basil too!!  Sad

As far as recipes, hmm.  I'll eat a tomato like an apple, they are so good!  But one thing I like is baked chicken breasts with tomatoes, basil, rosemary, garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper.  I don't have exact measurements - I just kind of throw it all in a cassorole dish until it looks right.  For this, I use diced tomatoes from a can though.  Sometimes I throw in other ingredients depending on what I have, but that's the basics of it.  It goes great with rice or rosemary potatoes.

Would teasing them and telling naughty jokes work too?

*runs off before the tomato pelting begins*

Roll Eyes
I have plenty of ripe tomatos to start the pelting - you'd better run fast!  (even faster if Gabi is after you - I hear she can run pretty fast).

Yum!!  Never thought of that.  Do you ever fry them?  My hubby's grandfather dusts them lightly with cornmeal and then fries them.

I have no tomatoes to throw I ate them all.

Mmmm that sounds good!  I've never had them that way.  I'd imagine it'd taste something like vegies in tempura batter.

LOL Juri!

You might want to look up some green tomato recipes -- there really is such a thing as "Fried Green Tomatoes", and green tomato relish.

Hope no one is throwing green tomatoes here, they don't go *squish*!!!

Well, more tomatoes with a little bit of crunch.  The tempura batter I've had was fluffy?  Is that the word I am looking for here?

*pauses running* Yay, it works! I know a couple of limericks of questionable taste, so let me know if you need to get those tomatoes ripened faster. *hears Gabi and BB getting closer and starts to run again*
