Knitting Socks
Aug 14th, 2005 at 8:35pm

I read something about knitting socks here somewhere. Don't remember who posted it, but I was wondering if you could share the "how-to"?

When my kiddos were little I used to knit a lot for them. And once upon a time I managed to make socks too. But I just don't remember anymore, it's such a looooong time ago. Cheesy

Please?  Smiley

I'd be happy to help - what kind of "how-to" are you looking for?  I'm assuming you already know how to knit and purl, correct?  Have you knit on double points before?  Are you just looking for a simple pattern?

*peeks in*

Just remember to be patient with your first pair. Socks aren't the easiest thing to knit. But, once you get hang of the basic instructions, you can modify it endlessly.

Be careful with the yarn. Don't pick 100% wool as it's not lasting for socks. A 75% wool/25 acrylic blend is best. If you are planning to do socks in one color or with just stripes, you can use slightly thicker yarn. If you want to do socks with many colors and patterns, you need a thinner yarn as patterned socks have two layers of yarn and become about twice as thick as plain socks.

There are lots of new sock yarns out there that will do all the patterning work for you - you just knit a way and watch the patterns develop.  As mentioned, most sock yarn is a blend of wool and nylon to ensure longer wearing.

Here is a tutorial for knitting socks from the toe up.
Toe Up Socks
Although most people knit socks from the cuff down, I prefer toe up so that I can make sure I have enough yarn for the foot, then knit the cuff until I run out of yarn.

Here is a tutorial for knitting socks in Two Colors.

And just to overwhelm you, here's a page with lots of help for knitting socks.  Knitting.about.com

If you want to knit your socks with a heavier weight yarn and larger needles, I'd suggest Lion Brand WoolEase Sportweight yarn.  This yarn works well for house socks that don't have to go into shoes.  Here's a pattern using this yarn.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know - I have LOTS more resources.

SmileyThanks a lot BikerBraid!!! I think, I work with this for a while. I never did socks from the toes up ......so, I def gonna try them. And I will start with a solid color just till I get the hang again  Smiley

Galadriel: Lady of the woods Smiley thank you for your advice as well. If you have patterns to share.......feel free. I have lots of time in the winter. Just sitting next to the fire place watching TV. What better thing to do than knitting socks for my entire family (puppies and cats not included  Grin )

Why exclude the puppies and cats??  OK, the cats probably would not appreciate the socks (but would have fun playing with the yarn while you are knitting!).  The puppies, on the other hand, would probably appreciate some warm booties for winter.   Wink

Hehehe  Smiley our cat - smokey - he's to old for that. He only goes for the real thing - live mice and moles....fresh out of the yard.

Now, with our Bear (our Beagle) I tried the sock-thing. Whenever the poor little thing gets cold feet - bless his heart - he has the hick-ups, just like a Baby. So, I bought some babysocks and TRIED to put'em on him Grin Grin Grin He didn't want any part of that!  Roll EyesWonder why??? Grin Grin

If you make socks that have a couple of dozens of colors in them, it's inevitable that one or two colors will match with whatever you're wearing.  Grin
