Split ends confusion

How can you tell the difference between split ends and normal outer hair growth on curly hair?  ???

Hair grows as a single shaft.  The shape of the follicle determines if the hair will be straight, wavy or curly.  A healthy hair has no frizz on the shaft or ends.
