Protection from sun
Apr 17th, 2005 at 6:06am

I think I just let go of my winter hoods, and I'm already thinking on how to protect my hair from too much sun.

So, how do you protect your hair, or don't you do anything at all? Please tell details like what kind of hats do you wear, how do you wear a scarf and what products do you use. Smiley

I'm not very good about protecting my hair from the sun.  I do wear a cap under my bike helmet which protects my hair from the sun and the helmet's harness.  If it is windy, I will wear a scarf.  If I know I'm going to be outdoors all day, my hair is usually braided and a bit of aloe vera gel used to control the ends, which some say will also help protect from sun damage.  I'm not so sure aloe has natural protection from sun or not - what I have read is conflicting, but I would tend to think it does not.

I avoid hats, but that is just me.  I would think a nice sun hat would be great for protection.

some say shea butter and even jojoba give natural protection but i am pretty sure in terms of spf that would never be more than 2 - 4. i was thinking of putting a drop of my Roc spf 60 (oilless) into a few drops of jojoba and put that on my hair. most commercial hair oils with an spf have the same chemical screen anyhow but also a huge amount of alcohol (second ingredient quite often, they even smell like alcohol!).  i was actually always putting a splash of sunscreen on my centre part cuze i tended to get a burned scalp at that place!

I've been wondering about the same thing, and I've been thinking about putting some sunscreen in a bottle w/ jojoba to spray on my hair quick in the mornings.  I'll have to look for the Roc brand Styg mentioned.

If it's windy or rainy I wear a scarf other than that I don't really do anything. I'm lucky that my hair seems to be pretty hardy plus being oily so it kinda looks out after itself.  Undecided Actually I don't go out into the sun much at all because I have fair skin and so my hair gets the benefits too from the lack of sun exposure.  Wink

Having just returned from a Boy Scout camping trip today, my hair was under a ball cap all weekend (had the troop name on it) Undecided  I like hats, but not ball caps!  Even so, it seemed to help keep my hair under control even when it was not put up.  That was a nice surprise since I was afraid I'd end up with knots everywhere! (Of course, my hair is just barely shoulder length now)

Other wise, I just like hats with brims.  Anything to keep some sun off & has that certain "look", and stays on without me having to keep shoving it back on all the time - which really tears up my hair.  I am careful about straw-type hats which can catch my hair.

One I wore this afternoon is "100% paper" (no kidding, I looked twice!) and is sort of a softened boater style. The crown is crushable and deep enough to stay on pretty well.  Didn't pull at my hair either. Grin

i use roc cuze it doesn't give me allergies. (i tried a vichy for kids once and it was awful. either i was allergic to the screen or the perfume.). the Roc is called Minesol protect, ultra high protection sun lotion (60 ip -spf, uva-uvb, screen: ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate; non-greasy, without perfume & non-comedogene). it's a white & orange bottle. i never found biological screens with really high uva protection. i have a mineral screen of avene for instance but it's just 25 spf uvb and 10 spf for uva and it contains aluminium. dunno if that's so much healthier than a chemical screen.   Sad

That sounds like exactly what I need, I'll have to look for it online.  I'm using a generic water babies brand right now w/ SPF 45, but its greasy and heavy, and I feel like I smell like a pool.    Embarrassed

I like the highlights my hair gets from the sun.  My medium-brown hair looks a lot more interesting with blond sun-streaks.  And no, I have not noticed any damage whatsoever from exposing my hair to the sun.  (though I have to put sunscreen on my part or it will burn Sad).  My hair has always been very healthy in general, so I don't worry about it.

Valerie, I feel the same way about Water Babies sunscreen.  Now I use Hawaiian Tropic (or something with Hawaiian in it).  It's waterproof and works about as well as Water Babies, but it's lighter and smells better.
