Haircut question
Mar 17th, 2005 at 12:54pm

Hey guys........

I just wanted to get opinions on this-

I've been trying to grow my hair out for a while, and it used to be really short.  I recently got a trim, but that was the first haircut I got in a really long time.  The problem is, I have a lot  of layers in my hair right now, and I didn't get the layers trimmed because I want them to grow to the length of my hair.  I noticed after the cut that I have a lot of splits in my layers.

Should I trim my layers?  Should I cut my hair to be all even and grow it from there?  I really want my hair to be all the same length.  Help!!!!!

This has been responded to in other posts, but I'll say it again.

The choice is yours.  Do you want length right away, or do you want all your hair to be one length?

When I grow my hair out from a short cut, I grow it out with all the layers until I get it to a length that I'm happy to stay at for a while.  Then I keep trimming my hair to keep it at that length until all the layers are grown out.  This gives me healthy ends to start with when I start the growing long phase.

Some people want their long hair as fast as possible, so they leave the layers and only trim the split ends.  At some point the hair will need to be evened up, but it can be done later.

It's your choice!  Grin

dust the layers only!!!! dust dust and dust!! i just fear if a hairdresser will touch them up, you'll start again at zero and will never be able to grow them out. i have the same problem and my hair is a whole lot longer than yours. believe me, my hair was chemically treated and all and i was able to avoid splits until now by regular dusting (the only nighmare i have now is the very thin appearance of the ends and the rag-like look of the remaining layers (in contrast to the neatly trimmed ends). believe me, try to get rid of them before you hit waist, for look's sake.

My experience for what it's worth:
I've been growing my hair for a year and a half now, from very short layers.  I am now barely shoulder length. Embarrassed  That is because I started by continuing with ~2 month trims to keep some kind of style/shape to my hair so I wouldn't go stark raving mad at the mess of growing out Tongue and look somewhat professional at work.  I still have a few layers, but I can live with them for now and will be working on length, length, length for awhile with only very occasional small trims on the ends.  Layers do make it hard for updos much longer than seems necessary.  Mini-claws are my best friends right now even for a simple ponytail.

I remember the last bad haircut I got - this was 4 months ago.  I went in there for a trim and came out with layers and something the haridresser called "attitude bangs."  I guess my willpower that day was low, but I know I did NOT ask for bangs and she did them without my asking.   Sad  I was so depressed!  I got up the courage to go for a trim last weekend to get rid of split ends, and that went really well so I know that this place is okay.

But hairdressers (at least the ones I've been to) insist on putting gunk in your hair and blowdrying it puffy, and I end up going home and washing it.  Boy, have I learned my lesson to be careful!!   Undecided

One thing I learned from my own mistake, which was going all one length first, is take your hair texture into consideration.  Do you perhaps have a tendency towards poof  8), a pyramid could form  Shocked.

This happened to me and it was so bad I ended up layering again and loosing a whole year of growth.

It does look like you are nice and smooth though so that wouldn't factor ;~) ...g

I just got my hair cut yesterday.  I was going to have the minimal trim, but she would have to trim my layers so that wasn't going to get me to my goal.  There was about 1-1/2 inches between my top layer and the bottom so I opted to cut.  I am very pleased with the result.  My hair is still long enough to put in a bun, and I feel that now I'll just take care of it and it just has to grow.  I plan on having trims every 8 weeks, but I have a hairdresser I trust.  This is what was right for me, but I did agonize over the decision.
I hope you have a good result no matter your choice.
Good Luck!

oh yeah!! that's why i say YES to "shorter" layered hair. i even have the pyramid thing past waistlength and i have FINE hair (maybe the frizz volume from chemical dye has something to do with it). i would start with deep layers and cut them away gradually, so you have nice hair all the journay down.

New Haircut question

I have a haircut question of my own.  I have fine hair (though it is of average thickness).   I tried to grow my hair for many years, and was frustrated by one stylist after another.  I kept asking for "just a trim for the ends" and they'd say "sure, only an inch" and then after they started cutting I'd notice that "an inch" was several inches.  Then they'd cheerfully say, "Oh well, I guess I did cut more off.  Doesn't it look great?"

Of course  my hair just kept getting shorter.  Then stylists would tell me that (a) I _should_ have a short cut and (b) my hair was so fine that it just never would grow long.   I always got the feeling that I was not supposed to choose my own hairstyle. And that there was something wrong with me (psychologically) and my hair (physically).

So I quit going to hairdressers.  And my hair has grown to what home sewers call the "bust point."  If you have fine hair, BTW, in reasonably good condition, how long _does_ it grow?  I am Caucasian/white and in good health.

Anyway, I need it trimmed.  After five years of no trims the ends have become ragged. I'm also wondering if I like the basic shape, which was originally rounded in back, and longer in back than in front.  No bangs.  I didn't have many layers and any I did have are no longer visisble.  I don't think I want any layers. When I had them a long time ago they didn't look good and needed constant trimming, which  I want to avoid.

So what I'm thinking of is this:  Having my husband cut my hair.  Yes, I might be able to find a hairdresser who would do what I want.  But after many consultations with hairdressers who said they'd do one thing and did quite another when I actually got my hair cut, I'm doubtful.  And I just don't want to hassle it.   And if it's OK to do a simple, unlayered cut, just shaping the hair and trimming the ends, I think my husband could do it.  He knows nothing about hair, but he's an engineer with a very precise eye and is very good about following technical directions.

So--whether my husband does the cut or not--do people recommend another rounded cut, a transition to all one length, or something else (if so what)?

I have a small head and my hair is fine, so I need some volume. I used to get perms, and I _would_ have to go to a hairdresser for that.  Someone suggested adding wave with rag curls or braids--does anyone have more details on that?

I am not "good with hair"--I've never used curlers in my life.  I hate blow drying. I just wash and condition my hair and comb it out.  Also, I use semipermanent (level 2) hair color.

I'm willing to try the rag curls or braids--oe perhaps spit curls fastened with bobby pins?  Does anyone have directions?

And can anyone recommend a good book on cutting hair (and hopefully some methods to curl it), that my husband and I can use?

Thanks,

Fran Grimble

You don't need a book, this website has all the info you need.

http://members.fortunecity.com/feye/trim/

It'll be even easier for you since you have your husband to help you.

Agreed, most stylists are evil when it comes to caring for long hair.
