Yo!

Hello... I am 20, and my hair is to the middle of my calves.  When people ask me how it got so long... I just tell them "I didn't cut it."  Grin

OK, kidding aside, I got it this long by protecting it well.  I don't use any artificial things in it, and I have never dyed it.  When I'm working out or doing heavy work, it's in a tight bun.  I hardly ever wear it down, which is probably why I was able to tolerate it for so long.  Honestly, it just... came to be this long before I knew it.  It seems like yesterday when it was only several inches past my shoulders.

One last note... Thanks for the welcome, bikerbraid.  Cheesy

hello & welcome ... why cut it so "short" again? is it so damaged?  or just totally tired of it?  Shocked
i suggest you don't trim it at once !
(hint: fingertip length is a "golden ratio" ... )

(sorry anais, i was first  Wink  )

Yo back atcha!

Welcome!  I'm so sorry that you had to find us under such stressful circumstances.  Undecided

I hope you don't have to make such a drastic cut.  Classic length might be less drastic and still achieve the objective of removing damage (and possibly help with detangling, if you have not been able to get out all the tangles.

I look forward to hearing how things work out for you.

I might have to cut it shorter because of:  split ends, frayed ends from getting the HUGE tangle out, and I fear that I can't really take care of it with my hectic schedule like I could before.  Sad

But getting it cut to my waist would still keep it nice and long.  Cheesy

Wow!  That must be gorgeous!  But I can understand that that length would be time-consuming to care for. Undecided

My suggestion would be to cut the minimum possible.  You can always cut more later if you need to.

Also, for the knots, I would recommend a detangler.  I use one from Suave on my young daughter's extremely fine hair, and it works miracles!

Best of luck!

Long hair is considered bohemian, which may be why I grew it, but I keep it long because I love the way it feels, part cloak, part fan, part mane, part security blanket.&&&&Sir Arthur Wing Pinero

Welcome! Your hair sounds gorgeous! Cheesy

EDIT: I found this link to Rapunzel's post where she gives some advice on clearing a huge tangled mess.

http://www.longlocks.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=help;action=display;num=105...

I'd suggest, that after you've got rid of tangles, you condition your hair heavily before cutting. That might help to see, whether such a dramatic cut is really necessary.

It also sounds to me, like you might want to try some new, easy styles that allow you to pay less attention to hair. Behind this link you'll find an entire library of styles- maybe something that suits your needs.

Here you can find instructions for many braided styles. They are made for braiding other person, but most can be adapted to braiding yourself.

Hi LadyVeruca!  Glad you found your way to LongLocks.  Hope you have found some good info to keep your hair at whatever length you want.  I agree with Galadriel's ideas -- go slow on the cutting/trimming, it takes too long to grow back if you decide you took off too much (as I've found out, although I've never even gotten to waistlength yet)
In any case, glad to meet you.  Looking forward to hearing more.

Welcombe aboard LadyVeruca
Your hair sounds such an amazing length.
I second (and third and fourth  Grin Grin) what has already been said: do the cutting of your length in stages. Let yourself adjust to the new shorter length and see if you really want to cut some more.
For me the longest manageable length is classic length, at least without having to rely on someone else's help. But don't cut it off all in one go. By doing it in stages maybe you will find that e.g fingertip length (what styg suggested) has gotten rid of all the damage you want to get rid of and still is a manageable length for you.
Whatever you decide  Smiley

Welcome aboard  Smiley
