The only pain I've ever experienced as a result of my long hair was once when I had it loose and went to get into the car. The wind caught it just as I was getting in and closing the door. I closed the door with a significant amount of my hair OUTSIDE the car. I could hardly move my head! I also had my hair fly out the window as I was closing it.

More seriously, however, someone with very thick and long hair might experience some neck or shoulder aches with their hair in certain styles. Changing the style usually provides quick relief. If your scalp is "sore" you are pulling your hair too tight and it should be loosened.

I'm obviously not a Rapunzel, but I've read about this... to me it sounds like that it's not the weight, but the pull that comes from making an updo that's balanced badly. If there's really lot of hair, I can imagine that it could stress the roots if .

Some people who haven't done buns before their hair was really long also claim, that if scalp isn't used to buns, it might hurt first. This pain usually passes, when the scalp gets used to the new style.

I know a gal at work that 'can not' wear her hair up for any reason because it will hurt her neck. She has very thin hair, but it is decently long. I always think she needs to learn some neck exercises or something, but whatever works for her I suppose. Roll Eyes

I've also known people that say they're headaches disappeared after cutting off their hair. Luckily I don't get headaches, and all the people I know that suffer from migraines have short hair already.

Yeah, I'm going to say Galadriel is right.. I have fairly thick hair and now that it's waistlength, I have to be careful with how I do updo's... if it's balanced incorrectly or pulled too tightly I can get a severe headache. It's easy to avoid the probelm though, I just have to take care and make sure I use enough clips or pins to help secure the hairstyle.

I have never had a problem with pain unless I have it pulled into to tight of a ponytail or have a hair pin point digging into my scalp. The weight of it has never caused any neck or shoulder pain.

I had a complete stranger once tell me that her daughter had a fever for an extended period of time, but it went away after they followed the doctor's recommendation of cutting her hair and keeping it short.

The woman was amazed that waist-length hair did not cause me to be totally disabled.

Other strangers have told me how the weight of long hair cause headaches which were cured by a cut. I am more than skeptical.

I get scalpaches from updos that are improperly done, i.e. too much tension in one area (like the clip area or the pin area snagging). Or uneven weight distribution. Frankly I think it's just my scalp that's the problem. Hair isn't that heavy. Often, sleeping with hair draped over the pillow will "train" my scalp to accept strange tensions or follicle positions

I have waist-length, thick hair, and it never feels heavy when it's down. If I put if up correctly, (firmly but not tightly) then if gives me no trouble at all. Sometimes (like right now!) if I've had a bun in for hours, it'll start to work loose and my head/neck hurts a little, but nothing serious. Oh, and I can't do a high ponytail anymore b/c it can't hold it firmly enough, and all the weight of my hair is concentrated on one point. I think the key is to have it all evenly distributed.
