Very sharp scissors.

I have a hair that splits very easily, and scissors are the only real help I know of. I check my hair every now and then and cut splits away individually.

There are some hair products (products that contain lots of silicones, I think) that "glue" the hair back together so that splits don't show. This isn't good, as the split still is there, and the damage just spreads upwards.

The forming of splits depends on many things. Some people have hair that just splits easily, but I think that with most people hair care habits can make a huge difference. Hair should be always treated as gently as possibly and keep well moisturized to avoid damage.

The best way to deal with existing splits is to cut them off. Silicone products could be used, but they won't eliminate the damage and (as you'll come to discover the more you read on these boards) sometimes only cause more.

Splits can come from using heated appliances on your hair such as hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons. Once the split has occurred, trimming it is the only "cure".

Anti-frizz products are out there - as mentioned above, they typically contain a lot of silicone. This will coat and glue the hair strand back together giving it the appearance and feeling of smoothness. If the hair is not allowed to absorb moisture, it will become brittle and break. The silicone products coat the hair so that moisture cannot get to the hair shaft. That is why so many people trying to grow long hair will avoid products with silicones (look for ingredients that end in 'cone).

I've found that you can use some silicones if you are careful to not over-use them and be sure to clarify or remove the product with either a clarifying shampoo or a vinegar rinse.

Learning to prevent the split ends is the best cure for them.

Absolutely the best cure for split ends is prevention and the ultimate solution is scissors. I'm struggling with multiple splits and I S&D a couple of times a week. Embarrassed

In between snipping, I've noticed that using shea butter on the ends temporarily glues the splits together until I can snip off the little SOB's. Angry

I use a homemade shea/conditioner leave in when I wash my hair and I"ve added a drop of shea to my daily hair oil.

It can save you an inch or so. Search and Destroy (S&D) can be time consuming and frustrating, but it will extend time between trims.

I use that on my permed and color-treated hair. It says it mends away and prevents split ends and dry hair. it is also a groomer for short hair. I use it 2 or 3 times a week.
