Do You Dress For Your Hair?
Nov 29th, 2004 at 8:08am

Hi All,

This is kind of a two part question.

1) Do you wear fabrics that will create less friction against your hair?

2) Does your hair influence your choice of clothing styles, such as dressing more like a romantic heroine, ect.?

TIA,

Interesting question!

During winter it is so cold and damp here, that I usually end up wearing a woolly jumper, which wreaks havoc on my hair. A lot of my clothes are wool, so I usually end up wearing my hair up whenever I wear those pieces.

During summer however, I do a bit more with my hair cuz I can wear lighter clothes.

At one time in my life my hair influenced my style a lot when it was shorter...but now I don't have time for it.

Actually, I think I'm beginning to look rather plain. Hmm... Sad LOL!

i kinda get your thing about the romantic style ... i rarely ever wear long skirts (which would be neat when you have classic length) and i was wondering - if i ever reach my goal - if i should consider that lol.
about fabrics ... i think i am rather more concerned about the fact i easily sweat in them or not ... i wear mostly black but still prefer coton over many other things, but it's harder to find these days. i also wear lots of viscose stuff and i have wool as well, but most of the time it's too hot to wear it (no icy cold winters where i live, right next to the ocean).

My clothing definitely affects my hairstyle, especially in the winter.  Wool, alpaca, polarfleece and other "rough" fabrics require that I wear my hair up.  I can wear it down more in the summer when I am wearing smoother fabrics that don't  cause my hair to tangle.

I do try to wear things that will cause less friction against my hair.. I don't have the money to go out and buy a million silk tops, but I do at least try and find things that aren't going to snag.  That said, I do buy things because they look good on me, not only because I can wear my hair down with it on.  Part of the fun of an outfit that might cause friction is finding the perfect up-do...

I don't wear dresses all that often, but I do tend to dress like.. well, a cross between an ancient wealthy Roman woman and an Spanish lady.  Long hair, dangly earings, and a pair of heels... *smiles*

I mostly always wear skirts, I just don't like pants.  Grin I usually wear short skirts though because I am fairly short 5 ft 2 in and long skirts kind of dwarf me. I have a problem with tops that button in the back my hair will tangle around the buttons.  Tongue Also anything with a hood I pass on because my hair never fits under the hood right.  Roll Eyes

I also have a foot problem that prevents me from wearing high heels. I find that when I wear my hair especially elegant, I wear a dress, whereas I usually wear neat, casual slacks.

I can't wear heels either cause I have back problems my chiropractor would have a fit if I wore heels.  Shocked I like boots so that is usually what I wear for dress or casual.  Smiley

No, but my hair dresses for me  Grin

1) Yes. I cannot survive Finnish winter without wool. But that's not a problem, since I always wear my hair up.

2) No. My style has remained unchanged since I started my studies. *weirdness-warning* I dress in a way that is most comfortable and doesn't disturb thinking. Natural fibers and no colors, ornaments or patterns. All my everyday clothes are in shades of white, brown, gray and black. My style is simple and neat, but original at the same time- I get often compliments about it. To this style, it's easy to combine either bun decorated with something nice or a braided hairdo. The result is not feminine, but neutral yet beautiful. Oh, and I don't wear heels unless in some very special occassions. Normally, my shoes are stout and simple.

My summer holiday and party clothes are colorful, but then I make just a bit different bun  Grin

When I worked for the airline, I wore 3 inch heels everyday (except when I was on the ticket desk shift - then I could get away with shorter ones, cuz I could hide behind the desk).

Needless to say, my feet were knackered after my contract ended.  Sad

Now, although I still really like high heels, I've been stickin to flat shoes more due to the comfort factor.

My feet thank me!  Wink

What fabrics are bad for hair? I wear a lot of sweaters and cotton and I have noticed hair on the back of my shirts. Today I tryed the "Juilet" but when I started crossing the hair over top of each other some of the hairs wouldn't lay flat they kept sticking up and looking stupid. Was very irritating! Has anyone tryed that hair style that might have a tip for me?

Actually, i do just the opposite, I do my hair according to what clothes I have picked out to wear for the day or occasion.  I am very strange when it comes to picking out what I want to wear, it has to fit my mood or else my entire day will be off...yeah, wierd, I know (drives my husband nuts!)  For example, if I am having a day where I am feeling kind of down and mopy I feel like I'd rather just blend into the background and not stick-out in any way, so I'll choose something of a soft, comfy fabric in a neutral color, usually grey, and then I'll decide what to do with the hair which would probably end up pulled up or back.  I could spend an eternity in my closet just looking at all of my clothes going "nope not that, or that, or that, nope, not this one, wrong color, not soft enough, too constricting, ewww...definetly not this!"  I even do this when I am not even leaving the house, trying to choose the right pajamas to sleep in!  I'm a nut case when it comes to this!  So once I finally DO find the right clothes to wear, then I can think about how the hair needs to be......phew! what an exhausting process!

Autumn - we are much alike.  I don't own a pair of pants - a few silk leggings (for those cool days) - but everything else in my wardrobe is either skirt or dress.  I'm just under 5'2" and tend towards just below or just above knee length skirt out of the house - and low calf/comfy around the house.  I never (well, RARELY wear my hair down - is up 29 days a month or more - but my daily "game" is matching a pair of Susan's hairsticks to my 'mood of the day', then searching for something to wear to match - For work it's simple.  I wear a white dress/nurse uniform every day - so - my only color comes from my sticks Cheesy

Living in California, the weather is generally mild - so my "warm" clothes usually consist of a soft sweater or an "oatmeal" texture jacket. Neither are unfriendly to my hair.  As you mentioned buttons - any dress or blouse or jacket that has buttons, hook/eye, or zipper in the back is an instant enemy.  I remove hook/eyes, wax zippers, and usually just don't buy things that button up the back.  It is SO annoying to have the "perfect" style - then to look up at the ceiling and when bending my head back down - have some lousy fastening destroy my hair!

Thanks to everyone for those incredible replies!

I'm in kind of style limbo- I'm doing too much thinking about my age.  I can't go out and buy a lot of clothes, etc. but I've collected quite a few pieces over the years, so it will be more of a sorting out process for me.  And I love putting things together in unusual and interesting ways.

Until very recently, jeans were my uniform if I wasn't at work.  They still are but I also have a couple of pair of slacks that I like to wear, too.  Shoes are clogs or boots and the very rare highheel.  I'd like to wear jumper type dresses but just haven't, yet.  I like the idea of dressing romantically with my (not-quite-yet) long hair.

It takes so little to amuse me, but I'm never bored!

Happy Holidays,
