Liberty spikes
Nov 24th, 2004 at 4:14pm

Hi, im a guy and I'm trying to perfect liberty spikes (about 4 inches at the moment) I use schwarzkopf taft extreme hairgel and schwarzkopf taft maximum hold spray, but I always have hair that lays in between the spikes and the ends fray sometimes.... (some people told me to use wood glue/knox gelatine) any ideas to stop those problems?

Elliot Jones,

Oh man! Grin Grin We can try to help you, but we'd all try to convince you to NOT to purposely put glue in their hair. Heck, almost nobody on this board uses a blow dryer or even hot water. We take an all-natural and heat-free approach to hair.

We hope you will convert to our hair religion. I can feel you roll your eyes as you read this.

Gelatin sounds hair-safe. You could um......... keep adding gelatin in between the spikes and make sure the extra hairs stay down. glob on some onto the ends. glob some some on the scalp. It's organic, should be okay... washes out. be generous with the gelatin.

Bikerbraid would know.. she used to use it for synchronized swimming.

I wasn't much help, was I? Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

if they sell "Wella shockwaves"stuff where you are i'd try their new range which includes stuff like "hard glue" its not really glue but gels hair very firmly indeed....and makes its very hard.

hope that helps!

Gelatin and wood glue would certain hold the hair.  Both are organic so you should be able to remove them from the hair with hot water and shampoo (a good oiling before washing will also help).

I'm afraid I can't help much more than this - as Anais said, most of us work more towards natural hair.

thanks, that did help i didnt think of really putting the gel inbetween the spikes themselfs...... but as for what to use in the way of gel... adhesives... I have heard such things as...

sugar / water
soap / water larthered
wood glue
elmars glue
knox gelatine... (supposed to hold a mohawk for an entire week!!)
gel ...
hairspray
people say not to use mouse its just too weak
egg white mixtures

so i guess everything organic ???
any more ideas? I'm willing to try anything to get some good spikes (I gues at my age I would be I'm 17) and thakyou for all advice in advance  Wink

Here's a receipe for the gelatin hair gel:

1/2 to 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin

Thoroughly dissolve gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated in sealed container.

For the hair spikes, I'd lean towards using more gelatin.  If you mixed a bit of wood glue into this mixture, you should get more gloss to the hair and it would hold better in damp conditions.  You could re-apply to the ends as necessary to prevent "fraying" and also to the base to incorporate the new hair into the spikes.

[DISCLAIMER:  I have never worn spikes, I have never helped anyone put their hair into spikes.  My 22 year old son has worn his hair in a short buzz cut most of his life, so I have absolutely NO IDEA WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT!!   Grin]

the mixture i heard was 8 packs of knox gelatine to 1 cup of water...(a lot thicker) apparently holds for a week even through sleeping / tornado's etc.. i will try your ratio... I am hoping to grow the spikes to 10 inches or so...

EIGHT packs  Shocked  ???   Oh my!  That would hold through just about anything.  The ratio I gave will hold the loose hair in place, but probably wouldn't hold long spikes up.  You will need to experiment with the ratio, maybe starting with a half package of gelatin and working your way up to the desired results.

Hi, I know this thread is old but I'm new to the forum.  Have you found the solution to you liberty spike dilema?  I just had a laugh because it reminded me of a story of a guy with a mohawk who had his mom iron his hair with a clothes iron. Hahahah I don't know if it's a urban legand tho.

But anyhoo, as a teenager of the 80's I am endowed with some high-hair knowledge.  The secret is teasing your hair to the desired height, lightly spray with hairspray making sure you get the roots.  If you do not spray the roots, the whole thing will tip over. Blow dry while trying to hold the shape in place.  If your hair does not feel "solid", repeat light spray and dry. Then, lightly spray a last time and mold your hair starting from the roots smoothing to the tips while blow drying.  This is where you can control how spikey it gets.  You will probably have to do each spike individually, or a few at a time.

You have heard correct, mousse and gels do not hold, or they do not dry fast enough.  Aerosol sprays work better than pump (Aquanet was the choice back then. blech.)

Sidenote, as soon as I got high hair out of my system, I never ever put styling products in it again.  I have had plenty to last me a lifetime.  Wink

PS - Teasing if you dont know, is when you hold the ends of your hair up, and comb it the opposite way.  It should be big and fluffy like Robert Smith before you try to mold into spikes.
