To have bangs, or not to have bangs?
Nov 4th, 2004 at 5:07pm

Has anyone else ever dealt with the dilemma of having bangs, or just to let them long?  My bangs are layered from chin length down, and now I am having this urge to cut them (to HAVE them cut, I should say) but I don't know if that's the right thing to do.  My problem is that I have a high hairline, especially around my temples, and when I pull my hair up I feel very embarrassed when those "bald" spots show through, even if I leave some down around my face.  To completely cover those spots takes too much of the side hair and doesn't look right.  That's what is making me think about getting some bangs cut in, but I haven't had any since about grade school and I'm nervous at the thought!  Has anyone gone through this "life-altering" decision? What to do, what to do ???

Tough decision.  As you well know, if you cut bangs then decide you don't want them, you have a looooooong growing out process.  (I cringe when I hear people talking about their bangs being at shoulder length and their hair is waist length!)

I've heard of people buying bangs that they can clip into their hair to give the appearance of bangs.  You might want to try something like that before committing to cutting you hair.

I have the same problem you do Maggie. When I wear my hair up, I have these thin spots on either side (although I don't have a high forehead, I DO have a massive flurry of wispy baby bangs that don't grow, which I HATE).

Once upon a time, I used to have bangs, but then I decided to grow them out because I was sick of them fallin in my eyes. This was at the time when curling them forward to precision with the curling tongs was really popular...needless to say, they were fried.

I've been considering cuttin a few longer layered bangs around my face, but am hesitant because I like having hair one length to put in my ponytail. I'm afraid I'm not much help to you at all!

I have that same kind of hairline and because of it I cut bangs about 5 years ago. I like them except that I also have cowlicks on each side so I have to dampen the bangs down whenever I get up after sleeping or look like I have two horns.  Undecided

Lately I have been wondering whether I should let the bangs grow out or not. I just don't know if I can tolerate the growing out period. I remember when I was in high school letting bangs grow out and they were the worst when they were to short to fasten back but long enough to hang in my face. Sad
Once they got passed the annoying phase they grew out to the length of my hair (which was mid back at the time) pretty fast.

I'll probably keep the bangs for awhile longer and grow them out in another year or two...maybe.  ???

Bangs are such a pain to grow out- which is why I have
tried and failed. They'd get to the  tip of my nose, or
even chin length and I'd cut them again.  I'm
getting tired of them, though, having to style them,
and what you mentioned about waking up in the
morning-same here!! So I'm growing mine out.

BB's idea of buying clip on bangs sounds like a good
idea- sort of  reverse hair extensions!

Same "problem" here and must say I've seen it a lot.  Yet I wore bangs for many years.  They had to be cut waaaaay back to fall over the side peaks though and frankly I just don't have enough hair to do that when it's getting long.  Plus the little suckers insist on falling towards the middle of my forehead to boot.

I think you really have to look at your whole head as a total picture and decide what you would like to live with, good luck, g

I have what I call "deep temples" (a neutral term) or a "dramatic hairline", which is positive. I think this is a better term than "thinning" or "receding", both negative terms referring to hair loss, clearly not the situation here.

Way back when I had bangs, I had to have them very deep in order to cover my hairline. The maintenance was a big deal, too. I much prefer having no bangs.

Thanks everyone for all the input! Grin  I still am undecided, though.  Like today, for example, I have my hair pulled up into a bun with one of those synthetic hair-hair ties over it (looks cute!), but every few minutes I find myself looking in the mirror to make sure my temples are not sticking out, I am very self-conscience about that, and I am sure that by  the end of the day I will end up with my hair just down so that I feel better.  I've been looking, and the kind of bangs I really like are not just the plain-jane-straight-across bangs, but the kind that "sweep" across the forehead and look so feminine and pretty.  I think I've seen this style on Cameron Diaz at one point.  But I don't know if that is actually a cut or just the way they're styled that makes them look that way, I'm clueless Undecided.  I know that it would probably be easier just to let my bangs longer, but I'm still curious.  Besides, it's only hair.........it will grow back..........right? ???  (oh how that saying scares me!!!)

I have to agree with the clip in bangs idea.

http://www.drlocks.net has got some wonderful new clip in bang extensions, and Doc Locks is a wonderful lady to deal with. She can help you out with pretty much anything if that's the way you decide to go. She'll also help you out with tips and tricks for hiding the hairline if needed.

http://www.drlocks.net/bangs.htm
Scroll down to the last item on the page for their new clip in bangs.

I mayself have bangs, because I have a positively HUGE forehead. I look like I'm sporting a solar panel if I don't have bangs. I trim my own once every so often (Like they get in my face type of deal), though I am considering getting a few shorter bits to frame my face when my hair gets longer, just so the transition between bangs and hair isn't as dramatic.

Thanks Kaylin for the link, that is a great site and it is something that I am considering now.  I think that for now I will hold off on cutting bangs in, at least until the next mood swing kicks in!  I never even knew that clip-on bang existed until seeing that, this opens up a whole new world of options, exciting! Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions, I think I've successfully staved myself away from the bangs...whew, that was a tough one!  My husband paid me a compliment last night and said that my hair has been looking nice lately, so healthy and shiny (gee....I wonder why Roll Eyes), and he told me not to anything dumb like coloring it or cutting bangs in it.  I just gave him a strange look and left it at that.  Could he possibly know about my secret happy place? Or just coincidence??? I wonder...
