The Shortened Ponytail

Here is how to make your ponytail a shorter length without having to resort to scissors!  Smiley I hope the pictures are clear enough. My brother was sitting while he took them and I was standing, so the angle isn't quite right. If someone needs further clarification I can try to take some more!

...

Hold your hair in a ponytail in your left hand (I have no idea why I have a big purple splodge in my hair! Must be leftover dye from a few years ago)

...

Hold a hairstick, tip facing the ground, next to the ponytail on the left. Then move the ponytail over the hairstick.

...

At this point you will have to loosen your ponytail some by pushing it towards the hairstick. This allows you to move the hairstick upwards.

...

Then bring the hairstick down, and voila! Your shortened ponytail is done. You can add another stick to keep it more secure if you want. You will have to experiment with what tension works for you!

Here is a shortened ponytail I did last month:

...

It is slightly longer because I made it looser than this one. Enjoy!

Great pictures, Leia!  Thanks for sharing them.

My favorite method for shortening my pony tail is to tie my hair in a knot, stick a hairstick through the knot to hold it in place and let the length of my hair hang loose from the knot!

I like that method too! This way, though, my ponytail is a bit longer which I like. I figured not many people knew how to do this style and most people know the knot, so I thought I'd share directions.  Smiley

i find all the styles i found featuring hairsticks stuck vertically to the scalp very great but for some reason i only manage to do it for a half updo ... there seems just no way it wants to stay up with all my hair and i wonder what i am doing wrong
~¤ cries ¤~  Cry
is there a specific trick in putting the stick down?

I have thick waist-length hair, and this style doesn't work-it falls out the moment I shake my head or something.  And I'm usually pretty good at making styles work.  So you might not be doing anything wrong-it probably depends on the coarseness (sp?) of your hair, or something.

Yeah, I can't do any kind of shortened ponytail with hairsticks.  (and not for lack of trying either!).   The only way I can do it is to twist my hair up as for a french twist, then secure the twist with one of those claw clip/barrette things.  then the length of my hair can hang back down.  It took me a long time to find a claw clip big enough to go all the way around my hair!

Thank you SpaceyBabe! I'm sure your hair will be long enough to do this style one day too  Smiley
