Pet peeve
Jul 28th, 2004 at 12:20am

I am incredibly lazy when it comes to my hair.  I wash it and comb it.  That is basically it.  My pet peeve is all the people who make remarks like, "you must spend hours on your hair," "you must be in the bathroom all the time fixing it..."  it isn't what they are saying, but the way they say it- as if us long haired ladies are self-indulgent and vain.  Honestly, in the past I have had roommates with short hair who spent HOURS on their hair as I waited to get into the bathroom!  Does anyone else experience this??

Yeah... I understand what you mean. These kinds of remarks go hand in hand with the Locks of Love comments that many longhairs also get. "Self-indulgent and vain".... you hit it on the nose. I think it's especially true for mothers with extra-long hair... because "moms should keep a short and quick 'do so they have time for their kids". Aaack! When I'm a mom I am definitely going to keep my tresses.

I get comments or questions about how much work my long hair takes.  I can usually show them in less than a minute how quickly I can put my hair up in a bun.  I then explain how my long hair is actually an example of how "lazy" I am with my hair.

There are many misperceptions on long hair out there.  We need to be the ambassadors to educate the rest of the world!

You ladies always know what I mean!  I get the "locks of love" comments every time I am getting my hair trimmed. (Yes, I do get it trimmed.) I always think to myself, why dont they donate THEIR hair?? -And stop worrying about mine???  Mine isn't even outrageously long.  It is just below the waist.  People should mind their own business.  Wink

Good point. I should say that next time someone brings it up.

My sophomore chemistry teacher was really impressed with my hair. I wore it in braids a lot that year, and he always asked me how long it took me to do it. He seemed so shocked when I said it only took a minute to do a simple English braid. Even a lot of the girls in the class seemed surprised. Good grief...the ignorance of short hair.   Roll Eyes

No one implies that I spend a lot of time on my hair, but I went on 3 trips with one of my close friends this year and she has short, flip length hair. Every morning she would take FOREVER putting wax in it and flicking it out to perfection and straightening her bangs etc etc, while I was ready to go in 10 minutes - comb, bun, and go.  Wink

As someone who has had short hair for most of my life, I am still amazed at how little time I can spend on my (just shy of shoulder-length) hair now and have it still look good.

With long hair, you can and should let it air-dry. Half the time I don't put any products in it. When my hair was short, I *HAD* to blow it dry every day to avoid looking like I had a spider's nest on my head. THEN I had to put a ton of goop in my hair to tame the bush that blow-drying created. Sheesh.  Roll Eyes

flip-length hair, I love that!  By the way leia, I have been reading your posts and was confused in one post you said the longest hair you've ever had was waist-length, but in your swirly-bun post you said you used it to put up your mid-thigh hair.  I'm confused!

Hmm, I don't think I said my longest hair was waist length... I think I might have said that my hair had to be at least waist length before I could put my hair into the swirly bun. If I didn't say that, that's what I meant  Wink! It's almost tailbone length now, and yes, my longest was mid-thigh.

I was so confused, but if you look under True Rapunzels, then under Very Long Locks you will find it.  I loved your swirly bun thing by the way, it looked quite posh on me, although my hair is slippery I had to use my hairstix.

It is so nice to "chat with" other ladies who always know what I am talking about.  As the other writer said, I  also have friends with short hair who are constantly doing their hair. Blow-dry, flat iron, then curling iron, then styling.
I use to see this at the gym too and was always amazed at the time these ladies spend on their hair.  Don't get me wrong, they can spend all day if they want to-but as far as maintenance, my long hair is a breeze. I think there is a lot of jealousy involved with these remarks but that is just my opinion.

I did change it - you were definitely right! I looked down below at my later posts and it said that in some old photos I saw it was classic length. It was actually past that, between classic and my knees. That was a looong time ago, though  Wink

hello ladies... I, too have been enjoying posts for a long time, but have never responded...  This topic was too near to my heart, and I couldn't resist.

I've always worn my hair at least waist length - and as a nurse, have developed many elaborate hair styles over the past 20 years of work.  Each night when I arrive there is always some short-haired lady who exclaims, "oh, who did your hair?"... good grief.  Yes, I have a stylist hiding in my bathroom linen closet, ladies... my secret is out.  These poor souls have no idea how simple life can be (and how much more room in the bathroom cupboards) without hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, gels, waxes, mousse, etc, etc, etc...  Yes, I do tend to buy conditioners by the liter, and have a neat little collection of oils... but SO much extra room in the cupboards!

I was stopped in a store a few weeks ago by a "well-meaning" woman who asked - 'how on earth can you find enough time to fix your hair so elaborately - I'm lucky to just yank mine into a rubberband' (yes, I cringed visibly with "yanked" and "rubberband")... but I then delighted in pulling out my hair sticks, shaking my hair loose, twisting it up and replacing the sticks in under a minute.  I couldn't resist being a bit sarcastic by replying,"well, I always thought getting out of the bathroom in less than a minute was pretty quick".  Shame on me - but she sure was shocked.  The look on her face was priceless.  Grin

Yes, it's actually patience they don't have. But patience is a virtue, so you can't deny having it. If you can convince yourself that something takes too much time, that's ok. Saving time is considered virtuous in our culture.

And really, attractive hair is something that shorthairs put a lot of time into, so it's reasonable for them to think, in their ignorance, that impressive long hair is time-consuming.
