Newbie.. I Need Help Badly
May 11th, 2004 at 8:51pm

Hello,

I just now joined your group and I am in desperate need of help. My daughter and I both have been chemically poisoned by Formaldehdye. It has left us sensitive to all chemicals and most natural odors. We are both having a terrible time finding a shampoo and conditioner we can use. I do currently use products named Free & Clear for chemically sensitive persons. It is not cleaning/conditioning our hair the way it ought to. Upon closer inspection of the ingredients. I found the products include citric acid/corn.. which we are both allergic to as well. I feel this may be one of the reasons our scalps are so dry.
My 10 yo daughters hair is in poor condition. I have tried everything under the sun with no success. She has red hair, and it is VERY dry. It is all straight except for the under layer at the back, which is VERY curly. She has very thin hair and many split ends. If I were to have all of the split ends cut off she would have no hair left. I try myself to trim it as much as I dare. I won't allow her to go into a salon as it is dangerous for her to do so. I only go myself twice a year and am very sick afterwards.
Can anyone help us with suggestion on recipes for shampoo/conditioner? Please keep in mind we CAN NOT tolerate ANY odor.. this goes for essential oils as well. We need them to be as fragrant free as possible.  Also, I am in desperate need of a gel when styling my hair. Anything that would help hold my thick straight hair.
I'm not sure if anyone would get upset by my asking this, but I am looking for natural soap/facial cleansers as well. Everything I have tried has dried our skin out terribly. Thanks to anyone that can help us.

Oh you poor dears  Cry.  As a chemically sensitive person myself, I understand your dilema.

Off the top of my head I don't have any specific recommendations for shampoo and/or conditioners.  Are you sensitive to natural scents as well?  There are some receipes in the Hair Care Recipe Cookbook on this site.

Aloe vera gel is an excellent natural setting gel.

For the dryness, I would suggest jojoba oil.  It has no scent and is an excellent moisturizer for the skin as well as hair.

When I first developed my sensitivities to scents, I used a soap called "Basis".  It did not overly dry my skin and had no "extras" in it.  Currently I use Clinique's facial soap.

I'll keep looking for other ideas for you and hopefully others can pop in with their ideas.

Can I ask how the formaldehdye poisoning occurred?

Hello,

Thank you for your help. I did find the recipe pages and wrote some off of it. I do not know anything about the different oils/friuts/veggies that a person can use. I mean I don't know what each ones purpose is.
I found a bottle of Lily of the Desert Organic Aloe Vera Gel one time, and I liked it very much. The only thing is the store never bought anymore of it. It was also VERY expensive. Would you know of a place where I could order aloe vera gel that's organic and reasonably priced?
We can't tolerate even natural odors. We are both very ill and I am more progressed with the illness. Chemical Intolerance is a bad illness for one to have. It robs you of your life, friends, freedom, and family. When you are in the stage that I am in.. things don't look too good for ya. I am disabled, can't work, shop, or function like I once did. My daughter is homeschooled because it is dangerous for her to be around chemical odors. We both have severe reactions that lasts from days to weeks after each exposure. It's a lonely feeling for both an adult and child to go through.
My husband bought a new mobile home and upon moving in it. I began having severe health problems. I was finally diagnosed last year with chemical intolerance. After my home was tested, it was confirmed the levels of formaldehdye in our home were excessive throughout these past years. It has ruined my life, and is now ruining my daughters from ever having a childhood and future. I have sought help non stop for over a year, and still no one will help us. We need a special home to live in, in order to not die. This is the most helpless feeling a mother can have.  Cry   I wish it upon no one.

What brand of jojoba oil do you use? The one I got was Dessert Essence and it DOES smell like something.  It's also much more golden than the other brands I saw. I'm wondering if there is another brand that might be better.

I bought mine from the Vitamin Shoppe.  There are no scents added to the oil.  I know there are other sources as well for unscented oil.

Were you able to get out of that place? Do you have health insurance?
YOu might want to find a good lawyer. Did you investigate your rights as a homebuyer in your state?

I've done a little hunting and found a few web sites that might help you out.

The Chemically Sensitive Living Store
Birch Hill Happenings base products
Patricia Allison Skin and Hair Care Products

For the aloe vera gel I found:
ENK Naturals
Aburey Organics
A1 Nutrition Products
Living Earth Herbs
Outlet Nutrition

Note: I've not purchased from any of these sites nor used any of the products specifically mentioned.

I found a number of Yahoo Groups for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities as well.  These groups might be able to provide you with more suggestions about more than just soap and shampoos to use.

I hope you can find something that works for you - let us know how it goes.

Noelkara, my daughter and I are staying with my parents at this time. This is a very short term solution as we need a home free of chemicals to live in. Basically, we must have an all metal home. There can't be wood products that is glue bonded or have been chemically treated.
The problem with finding an attorney is this.. none of them want to go against the HUGH corps that are involved with the building materials in our home.
I do have insurance, but it doesn't cover all of the medication we have to take. My daughter takes sublingual drops and I give myself many shots a week.
I haven't checked into our rights as a homebuyer in our state. I'll have to see about this.

Bikerbraid, thank you so much for your help. Some of the links I am already aquainted with, and the rest I will check out soon.

What state are you in? Who owned the home before you and do you know where they are?
YOu really need to find a lawyer. The civil suit you fiile may or may not be against the coorperations. It may be against someone else involved in the process, possible the people who sold you the home.
As for medical care, is there a clinic in your city for low income people? Call the victim's assistance office of your county courthouse, because they may be able to give you numbers of resources that can help you.

As I was looking for sites for you for shampoo, etc.  I did run across a number of support sites for people with multiple chemical sensitivities.  If you are not already tapped into one of those, I'd suggest checking them out.  They may be able to guide you to an attorney that is already familiar with the issues and knows how to handle cases like yours.

If there is written documentation of the formeldehyde levels in your home, you should be able to go after the builder and product suppliers.

Hi Lego, I'll go ahead and answer this..

When shopping for jojoba oil, the important things to look out for are also what you look for in a diamond (kind of). Most jojoba oil sold from soapmakers' sites fit this criteria.
(1) Clarity: Jojoba should be a transparent color with no added scent or preservative.
(2) Color: Jojoba should be a nice golden color. Sometimes, they'll have a refined white kind that is devoid of nutrients. I don't know if those nutrients and vitamins really mean anything when applied to the hair, but the decolorized stuff does last longer. I stick with the golden kind.
(3) Carat: well, not really. Jojoba tends to be expensive and I just wanted to point out that soapmakers' jojoba is the same as the expensive jojoba. (e.g. the quality of bulk jojoba and commercial jojoba is the same, as long as they are both golden and cold-pressed) Jojoba should run about 7 to 8 USD per 8 oz. Or about 11 USD per 16 oz.
(4) Cut: just kidding.

All three of these sites have the golden jojoba oil listed under "oils and butters" or "carrier oils"

Anais has given excellent information regarding jojoba oil.  I've purchased mine from Vitamin Shoppe, but any place that sells the oil without other additives should work.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I recently got some Californa Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash and it is totally non-scented.  It is available through drugstore.com and you can view the ingredients on that site as well, under "view packaging".

It is a shampoo and body wash and I have used it to wash my face and it is quite gentle.

I hope things get better for you soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about all of this..  and although I can't help much, I would like to offer this...

You mentioned you needed hair gel, and I've seen several sites that says you can make hair gel with plain (clear) gelatin and water.  Gelatin doesn't have anything scented in it, and I've heard the gelatin makes for a good hair gel.  Just a thought.  I wish there was something more I could do for you  Cry

If it's all right, I'll pray for you and your daughter for healing.
