Curly Haired Girl Needs Help
Feb 17th, 2004 at 7:47pm

Hi. I have strange hair Undecided...in the front, its very wavy and the bangs are more unruly. The back is majorly curly, and very untameable. I can live with it, but please help me manage better! In the past, I straightened my hair with a flat iron very often (like every 1-2 weeks) and had it highlighted...big mistakes! But for about 1 and a half years my hair has been recovering, and the highlights have been died over so it looks a lot healthier. The tips faded a bit and are still really dry, but after a few more haircuts, my hair will be au natural once again 8)...Enough background, Heres what i need help with: Does anybody know of any products that help tame unruly curly hair that dont weight it down? I let my hair dry naturally every morning even though i freeze in the winter, unless i dont wash it that morning (rare occassion...) So if you know any products or ways to help me, please post them! Thanks so much!  Roll Eyes

Welcome!!

Although I don't have curly hair myself (hopefully one of our curly girls will add their comments), I do know that a lot of curly heads have gone to washing with conditioner only - no shampoo.  This seems to help tame the curls without having to weight them down with lots of products.

There is a whole "curly girl routine" that I know some people use which works with your natural curls.

I'd suggest you meander over to the Curly Girls Room on this board for more ideas.

Hi wasab,
I would suggest a leave in conditioner, there is Nexuss Humetrss (not a leave in but you can use it as one),  Aveda's Elixir, or Aveda's styling detangler.  For non leave-ins, I think Abba's Moisture Scentsation, Aveda's Sap Moss (Shampoo or/and conditioner) or the Garnier Frutis products are good.  Generally speaking, you need a really good moisture intensive conditioner.   Whatever climate you are in, and the present season will also have a large role in what your hair will do (and not do  Smiley).

I'm not that familiar with products that don't weigh hair down beacuse my hair needs the weight, so if the products I've listed are too much as a leave-in conditioner, then stick with a daily rinse, or leave the product in overnight to rinse out.   If you are looking for styling products, then what I've found is that I have to use diffrent products that work best with diffrent curls.

Oh, and I know this might seem obvious, but its something I just realized - start with product(s) on the curliest sections (and let that dry a bit) before you work your way to the top.  Hope this helps.
