Fine/Thick? Feathered style
Sep 12th, 2003 at 6:23pm

Please help! I have long, straight hair (mid-back) which has always refused to take a curl. It also doesn't like velcro rollers. It lies quite flat to my head unless I side part it, which I'm not crazy about doing because then it bulks up to the point where I'm blind on the side the part is on...doing just a little part doesn't work either...it's all or nothing!
Have also noticed that when I pull it into a bun, braid, any updo it "bulks up" quite noticeably, when  I let it down, soft waves occur but leave after about an hour..is this fine hair or what is going on???   I feel so confused!
Also has anyone tried a feathered look a la Farrah Fawcettt, has very pretty side wings (my hair naturally "floats" when I walk...how hard would it be to style?

My hair is very fine and never used to take a curl (age has added waves to my hair).  I found a couple of "tricks" to try to get more body and lift:

1.  At night, put your hair into a bun on the top of your head.  When you take it down in the morning, try to not comb/brush through the hair close to your scalp.  Comb/brush just the ends of your hair.  This should give you some curl from the bun and lift from having your hair in the opposite direction all night.

2.  For curls/waves, try doing rag or sock curlers with your hair damp.  There are directions for these elsewhere on this board.

3.  Using a bit of styling gel or aloe vera gel on your hair before rolling/curling it will help it to hold the curls/waves better.  Just try to avoid gels with a lot of alcohol as that will dry your hair.

As for the feathered style, I never found it looked right with my fine hair.  Maybe if you have a lot of hair that is fine it would work better, but I found my hair was just limp and all different lengths (making it even harder to do anything with it).

Hope this helps a bit.

2So it sounds like I have fine hair! At last, I know! I am job-searching for work as a receptionist, love my long hair, but feel when wearing it down it doesn't have enough style, doesn't EXPRESS me properly.
Feels like my life is changing, hair needs  to keep up. Any ideas other than Farrarah? Saw it and fell in love with it..here is website if you want to have a look, give me yr opinion....http://www.2hairstyles.com/long19.shtml

That is a nice style if your hair will hold the curl.  It looks like it was cut to "frame" the face.  I like that better than the layers all around (very difficult to maintain and grow out).

What is your long term objective with your hair?  Are you wanting to grow it longer or keep it at the current length?  Do you have bangs currently, or is your hair all one length?  Is it blunt cut or rounded/V-shaped?

Have you tried different ways of putting your hair up?  Braids, buns, twists?

Long term I want to keep my longer hair...I have tried bangs before and don't like. I have had my hair down to my waist and enjoy the feel and freedom of long hair. However, because I am job-searching I want something that reflects ME to the employer...no matter how I am feeling or how the weather is - guess my problem is is I want the flexibility to not have my hair up or pulled back to have it look professional. Right now I do. Any suggestions on how to achieve this? Feeling so frustrated with this - I feel like I have grown emotionally so much lately and want my hairstyle to reflect this.

Oh yeah, it is round-cut in the back - think horseshoe shape.  Currently it is layered. Have tried braids, buns - love putting my hair up  but want the flexibility of having it down without it being in the way.
