My hair's a nightmare!
Apr 17th, 2003 at 5:15pm

Hi, everyone:  My hair grows, but I can't seem to grow it longer than about the bottom of my bra strap (the horizontal strap).  I color my hair (gray's coming in more all the time), so I KNOW my hair grows.  But it gets to one point and then it begins to break off like crazy.  I swear within a week or two it looks like I got a hair cut.  A BAD haircut.  Even my friends argue and accuse me of lying to them about cutting my hair!     Embarrassed

Anyway, my hair has been a HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE mess... beginning about two months ago.  I just don't know what to do about it.  It's wavy/curly so I can't pull it back in a ponytail without looking rediculous.  The "bang area" (I don't have bangs, really, been growing those out, too) has a ton of broken hair that waves, sticks up and out, or worse.... lays flat as a pancake across my head.  I avoid going out to dinner, etc. with my fiance because I ALWAYS look like I just got up, or worse... like I just don't care what my hair looks like.  But I DO care!

I use ONLY professional salon products and am even trying a new formula by Nexxus to "anti-age" hair.  Yeah right.  Has yet to work.  My hair is dull, HORRIBLY dry/crispy, jagged, and now all the breakage has given the illusion that I've had my hair layered by a weed eater... but I've not had so much as a trim in about 2-3 years.  My hair gets JUST to a point where it looks like it's getting longer than my bra strap.. then suddenly, WHAM!  Breakage or whatever shortens it again.

I'm overweight and dieting... so I don't exactly feel "pretty" these days, and now I'm dealing with hair that looks like the stereotypical "hag" at Halloween.  No exaggeration.  No joke.  I'm at my wits end.

The way I describe my hair nowadays is: "Looks like a dead animal pelt."

I need help here, ladies!!! I look horrible.  Absolutely horrible.   Embarrassed

Poor dear.  No one deserves to feel so bad about themselves.  Cry

You say that you are dieting.  Are you taking any vitamins to make sure you are getting the proper nutrition?  At a minimum I would recommend a basic one-a-day type vitamin.  I have found that extra Biotin and Silica has helped strengthen my hair and reduce fall out.  Breakage could be due to dryness or buildup of products.  Does your shampoo and/or conditioner contain any ingrediants that end in -cone?  These would be silicone based and may be building up on your hair and suffocating it, causing it to lose its moisture and break off.  You might want to try a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup. Have you tried applying any oils to the ends, such as jojoba oil?  I found this to be helpful in remedying my dry ends.

Do you use a blow dryer?  If so, try to eliminate it from your routine, they can be very drying and damaging, particularly to the ends.  Do you use any heated appliances such as curling iron or straigtener?  Again, if you do, you might want to stop using them as well.

Let us try to help you - let us know more about your hair routines.   Wink

First of all, it sounds like you need a trim! Yes I know this sounds like you really really don't want to do it, but if you cut of an inch or so, it will grow back healthier rather than keep breaking!

Why has your hair been a mess for two months? What was it like before that?

For hair that sticks up, your might use some "frizz ease" or Bikerbraid mentioned that she uses jojoba oil for flyaways. Flatness can be fixed as well; after washing your hair, scrunch a bit of mousse in. This will mkae your wavy/curly hair very beautiful curled, give it volume and no frizz.

The dieting bit could also be the source of your hair problems. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of diet are you on? I am not overweight but I do watch my foods to make sure I am eating healthy. I am vegetarian, but I eat healthy and non-fattening foods such as vegetables, fruits, bread, rice, etc. For protein I eat eggs. When I first turned vegetarian I lost a lot of hair because I wasn't "smart" about it, but now that I am, my hair is growing back healthier.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling pretty at the moment. This is sort of off the topic, but sometimes when I feel unpretty I spend a whole day relaxing. I take a long bath and wash my hair, and while I usually love to see it dry wavy, my mother loves it when I put in rollers and make it straight. (This actually makes me miss my waves! lol!) Anyhow, using big rollers may make you feel better about your hair. While you are taking your bath you can put in a deep conditioner and um... read a book  Grin. Then you can wash this out. Tie it up in a towel and then I usually do my manicure and pedicure. I file and cut my nails and put pretty new colors on them or sometimes a french manicure. When your hair is almost almost dry, you can put in some rollers. Leave them in for at least half an hour or however long it takes for your hair to completely dry. During this time, you can pick out something pretty to wear and put on a little bit of make up. When you take your rollers out, the results are lovely, your hair will be pretty straight with a cute wave at at the bottom. And then you can go out and show the world how lovely you look! This always makes me feel better, I hope it works for you!

Please do your best to stop stressing, join a gym maybe, or go jogging with your fiance. Learn some new updos that you can do, especially on bad hair days. Your hair will thank you! And if you are patient and stop worrying your hair will grow  Cheesy

Hmm,all the others have already given great advice! One more thing though:You mentioned using NEXXUS products-I can only speak from my experience-but my hair really hates Nexxus(all of their products),during the time I was using them(I think it was Therappee and Humectress cond.)my hair became ultra dry, frizzy and started to break all over. Embarrassed Maybe you could try some gentle/very moisturizing products like Biolage Conditioning balm or L´Óreal Mega Moisture Shampoo+Cond.?

Thanks so much, guys.  I was gone all weekend and last week was a nightmare so I couldn't come back to the board until today.

I know that I'm supposed to get trims, at least 1/2 of the info I've read out there says so, but it doesn't do anything but make my hair shorter.  It doesn't get healthier or grow any faster, and it usually takes me months to get the inch or so they took off back again.  But, I'm so tempted to just go and tell them to layer the darn stuff.  Thing is, I tried cutting my hair once before to make it "healthier," but all it did was leave me with the same perpetual bad hair day.... only with shorter hair (which is really scary!).  Embarrassed

As for dieting, yes.. I'm taking a multi-vitamin and calcium.

Oh, and the Nexxus products: Most of their products are really "heavy," but this new line of stuff is pretty light.  My fiance used it and his hair felt and looked awsome afterwards (he's got very fine, thin, straight hair).  But I've just started using Nexxus this past week.  I was using Tigi products before that.  And the short, fly away hairs are very short (broken off) hairs that don't really lay down flat no matter what.  My hair's curly (when it's healthy anyway) and so it tends to stick up and out when it's really short.

Ann-Marie... wow, so sorry to hear what those Nexxus products did to you!  Nexxus is usually pretty heavy stuff, so I can definitely see it doing that.  It got better when you started using something else, right??  I would buy more stuff, but I've bought so much in the past month that I don't dare spend anymore money on hair stuff.

Bikerbraid:  I'm on a pretty run-of-the-mill low-cal diet.  I went on Atkins a year ago, however, and began losing HANDFULS of hair!  My hair is half as thick as it was then, and it fell out at an alarming rate... it scared the living daylights out of me when it was happening!  But you know, no one else I knew on the diet had that problem!  I still don't understand it all.  And thanks for the concern.  I don't mean to whine so much, but it's just that everything seems to be falling apart all at once on me and I was hoping to age a little more graceful than this!
Undecided

As for a blow dryer... I use one on the "cold" setting only, and I don't dry my hair all the way.  But up until I started having so many problems....most of it occurring about 2-3mos ago.. I used to blow dry my hair all the time (never on high/hot setting, and always diffusing).  Heck, 15yrs ago I used to bleach my hair to platinum (embarrassed about that now, though.. lol) every 6wks.  Always blow dried my hair and washed it almost every day.  Never had a problem, and my hair was always soft, shiny and manageable.  Go figure.  Undecided

If I don't use a blow dryer---my hair looks even worse, and it's even less manageable (go figure again).

Repunzel:  I'm going to read that article as soon as I'm done posting here.  Smiley

Leia:  Thank you also for all your advice and support.  I honestly hate looking and sounding so "needy."  It really helps to get all this advice.

you guys are the best. Thank you.   Smiley

Two things alarm me here... one that you used to have healthy hair even when you used chemicals on it, and two that a change in diet made you lose handfuls of hair.  PLEASE consider going to a doctor!  Your problem may not be your hair at all but a health issue.  There are several things that can affect the health of your hair, especially thyroid problems, and it would probably be a really good idea to rule that out.

Repunzel & Ann-Marie:

First, thanks for the kind words.  As for the web site... I wish I still looked like that!  I gained about 50lbs since those photos were taken a few years ago, and my hair in those pics WAS the hair I was happy with for sure.  My hair is dull, frizzy, dry, and I have half as much as I did in those pictures.

A couple of friends of mine out-of-state have hypothyroidism and they mentioned maybe getting tested...mostly because I can't seem to lose weight no matter what I do.  But I dieted over the last couple of weeks and lost 2lbs... I had to go REALLY low on the calories, but about 2lbs came off.  I think most of that was water though.  At any rate, I'm thinking I need to see a doctor as well.  Also, those pics on my web site, I've got highlights in my hair.  You know, where they bleach out the color and put on another color?  It's subtle, but my hair was chemically treated even then.

I really appreciate all your advice and help.  I want so bad to look like myself again, and my hair was like the one thing I really liked about me.  I'll let y'all know what I find out though.. it really is confusing, isn't it?   Undecided

I also recommend that you see a doctor.  Be sure to mention the hair loss, and your frustration with weight loss.  Unfortunately your body will go into a survival mode if you drop your food/calorie intake to extremely low levels and will slow down the metabolism, making it harder to lose weight.  Also, exercise it very important when trying to lose weight - it does not have to be major workouts, but just increasing your activity level - even if it is just walking more.  Increasing your water intake can also help alot to remove the toxins in your system.  Once checked out by the doctor, you might consider adding Biotin and Silica to your supplements.  If you are pre-menopausal, that can also be a cause of changes in your hair including hair loss.

See your doctor and hang in there.  Let us know how you are doing.

Yeah, you're right about the starvation mode thing.  But the program I was on for the last couple of weeks was low-cal, but not low cal enough to hurt anything, and it was cycled with a high-cal day every fourth day.

As for exercise...3hr dance practices, cardio, and weight training have been my way of life for years and years.  I've been a regular gym-goer since I was 21.  This is another reason I'm so perplexed about the whole weight loss issue---I know people who don't exercise and who are losing weight like crazy because they're "dieting."  Heck, I used to be able to drop weight EASILY by just cutting out snacks and junk food.  No fancy diets, no personal trainers, etc.  But now it's like pulling teeth to take off even one pound.

I've got all but one symptom of hypothyroidism, but that doesn't mean I have it.  It very well could be perimenopause, and in fact I'm more apt to believe it's that than hypothyroidism.  Both have identical symptoms, with a couple of exceptions.  And the feeling of having PMS all the time---well, that's a red flag for sure.   Undecided

I just hope that whatever it is that it can be fixed.  The fatigue, dry skin, and ESPECIALLY that doggone dry, brittle, crispy hair is depressing as heck.  I was so hoping that it was just something I was or wasn't doing shampoo and/or conditioner-wise.

Thanks again.  The saga continues....  I'm sure it's not going to be an easy thing, trying to find out what's causing this.  We'll see.

OK, exercise is not the issue with you - I only wish I could get that much exercise in!  Walking and biking are all my broken body can handle, oh well..

I can tell you that weight gain has been a MAJOR issue with me with menopause.  I also experienced hair loss, a change in my hair texture (it went from stick straight to slightly wavy), and dried out my hair.  This of course does not even touch the mood swings, etc.   Tongue

Get checked out by your doctor.  If it seems to be the hormones, you might try Remifenin  (www.remifemin.com ) which I found to be useful in controlling a number of the symptons.  You can get a free sample from their web page (and they give you coupons as well).

I hope you start feeling better about yourself soon.

Thanks for the info!   I guess it'll be the process of elimination for me.  I can get the thyroid panel w/TSH for $25 and I don't have to see a doctor for that test, but if it comes back normal or abnormal... I can go from there.

I forgot who mentioned the menopause and weight thing, but I've heard that it can go either way---weight loss or weight gain.  So many post-menopausal women who get too thin and end up looking gaunt.  I guess there's equally as many out there who end up gaining rather than losing, which would most likely be what happens to me... knowing my luck!  Undecided

Thank you... I could use a little luck these days.   Smiley

I figure the thyroid panel will come back normal, but I have to eliminate it at any rate.  There's got to be some reason my hair and skin's gone so bad so quickly.  I've also heard that some thyroid tests show a false-negative and that some kind of antigen test should be done if it comes back normal and the symptoms persist.  Talking a doctor into something like that may not be so easy.  But.... I really want my doggone hair back!
