First aid on bad hair days
Dec 19th, 2002 at 9:05am

Hi,

on bad hair days there are only three possibilities:
1. Staying at home  Wink
2. Trying to make a style like a braid or a bun.
3. If it doesnīt work: Wearing a scarf! Trough the years I discovered a variety of scarf styles matching to any opportunity- elegant, sporty or a little bit dramatic  Smiley

Oooh, I like the "staying at home" idea.  Can you imagine?  "Can't come in to work today, bad hair."  I love it, LOL!  I guess that would definitely qualify as a "personal day" eh?  :D

Can you describe how you wear your scarves?  I would love to wear a scarf when it is windy, hair is greasy, I'm too lazy to do anything else........

Thanks!

Hi,

before choosing scarf style you should know which effect youīd like to get and if you want to protect your hair from rain, wind or too much sun or if you want to wear a scarf to cover your hair on a bad day and use scarf as completion to your clothing.
Here my favourite styles:

1. A simple but elegant look you can achieve with the most simple method. Use a quare scarf folded to triangle or a rectangular scarf, place it on your head and tie a knot under your chin or cross it under your chin and tie the knot in your neck. Leave the hairline free for a more peppy look. You may use a brooch if you like.

2. This one I like if it is really nasty weather because it keeps me worm. Use a square scarf folded to triangle and take care it is big enough. Place it on your head and use a brooch or needle to pin it under your chin. Take one of the tips and pin it with a second brooch on your opposite shoulder (for example right tip on left shoulder).

3. This is an easy look if your hair isnīt presentable on that day. Use a square  scarf folded to triangle. Place it on your head and tie a knot unter the third tip on the nape of your neck. Let the tips fall on your back or to the front over your shoulders. Goes great with casual wear like jeans.

4. Second easy look for not presentable hair. Goes with every style if you choose the scarf suitable.
Use a square scarf folded to triangle. It may be helpful if you style your hair in an bun.  Tie a knot as described in 3. to fix the scarf on your head, but it should be very loose. Take the third tip which covers the nape of your neck and fix it tight under your bun (my trick is putting it under the ponytailholder). Undo the knot which fixes the tips, cross them under the bun, take the tips over the bun and tie a knot. If your hair is not very long and/or thick you may take the tips under the bun again and tie the knot "hidden" in the nape of your neck.

5. This look is done in 5 seconds und looks pretty: Use a rectangular scarf (70x20") an place it on your head. Cross it under your chin and let the ends of the scarf fall on your back.

Hope you could understand my explanations  because doing it in English was a new experience for me  Wink
Let me tell you that leaving either the front neck or the hairline generous free takes away the touch of old-fashioned.

I always rely on the old standby:

the ponytail

Of course, I'm still learning how to deal with long hair - this is a new experience for me.  Tongue

LOL -- love the scarf ideas -- now I just need to acquire some! Smiley  My mother is getting ready to knit me a mobius scarf -- you know those things that are one long continous loop with a twist in it?  That should keep my hair and neck warm.  Can hardly wait. Smiley

I really need to get/knit some scarves though! Smiley

As for other styles, I have to fall back on the ol' single braid.  Really bad days mean pony tails don't work, but I can always make a nice thickish braid.  Plus, since my bad hair days often coicide with my feeling sick days, I can always fall asleep without changing this style and wake up without a crick in the neck or incredibly snarled locks.

On the worst of my bad hair days Shocked nothing beats the 20 second, up into a bun, option - just pull the whole mess back and twist it up.  (for some reason folks I've talked to with short hair think it looks more professional/like you spent more time on your hair in the morning than the classic ponytail/braid   Tongue)

I have several snoods like the stars of the 30's and 40's  wore.  They are decorative hair nets and they do a great job of keeping my hair under wraps!!!  The come very plain or beaded for formal occasions.  The other method I use is that I part my hair from ear to ear and brush it to one side and braid it I take that braid and braid it into one long braid on the back of my head.

If these don't work I like the stay at home option!!! Wink

My grandaughter taught me a trick for a bad hair evening out.  I throw it up in a bun, give it a very light dusting with the sparkle powderpuff she gave me and tuck in a few very small flowers.

Add some pretty sparkle earrings and I'm suddenly beautiful  Grin

That sounds like a great idea.  I've always wondered how to use some of that sparkle and not look like I'm trying to be 20 again.  8)

For me, a bad hair day consists of my wavy hair becoming *poofy*! It doesn't happen often anymore, when my hair was short and curly and brushed (oh please those of you who have curly hair don't brush it! Anyway it used to become very big but now that it is longer it's usually flat. When I had a bad hair day there were still many options for me, ponytail was out because the hair would poof out from the back! I could put it in a bun or twist or a complicated updo and it would be fine, and actually hold a lot better because of all the body!
On greasy days (of which I can have many since I wash my hair only 2-3 times a week), I realised that brushing it back, though taking it off your face, makes the hair shine and look obviously greasy. So usually I leave it down and part it down the middle, because this way it doesn't look like it's dirty and it's also flatter so it makes it look longer  Tongue! If it's not a good day to leave it down, a cute style I really love is just taking a few pieces from the sides and putting a clip on it. You can braid these two pieces or twist them around each other for variation.
Luckily the longer my hair is the less bad hair days I seem to be having! I wish someone could tell me how to make it grow faster  Cry!
Anyway for those bad hair days - DON'T WORRY it will all be over soon! Smiley

I think I can honestly say I don't have bad hair days.  My waist length hair may not always do what I want, but I can always put it in a bun or french braid, french twists, twin braids.....I have many options.  The hard part is deciding which hairsticks or elastics to use!

I agree that bad hair days are not so common with long hair!

People with short hair always ask how I can find the time for my long hair and they have a hard time believing that it is *so much easier* than short hair.  No blow dryers, no curling irons, no hot rollers, no hair spray, no daily shampoos, no monthly trims because it's looking shaggy, no hair bleaching, just enjoying my hair!   Smiley

Yes, it takes time to dry, but it dries while I play on the computer or read or watch the TV so it really isn't any trouble.

Brushing is a joy because I'm blessed with straight tangle free hair, as long as I keep the dead ends cut.  Using hair jewelry is an added plus!

I love long hair!!!

My hair is tangle free too  Grin! Ok, it's not perfect and straight, but i keep it very well conditioned and the only time I ever have to use a brush is just to smooth it out! How long is your hair Linda?

Hi Leia,

I love your name   Smiley

I kept my hair at bra length for almost 30 years (I'm 54)and only started letting it grow longer a few months ago. It is half way between my bra and my waist already!  Cheesy

I'm going to see just how long it will grow.  Then I will probably settle for bottom length so I can wear it down without the grandchildren (1 1/2 & 2 1/2 yr olds and a new baby due Feb 7th)  holding onto it while we go for walks.  They love to hold my skirt, hiding behind it when we meet someone they don't  know, and I can just imagine them grabbing a handfull of hair to keep from falling!  Shocked

How long is your hair?
