Title: Breakage at the roots
Post by LadyOfGold on Apr 5th, 2010 at 8:23am
My hair is pin straight, dark blonde, and ALMOST to my shoulders and collarbone, which was my first goal in growing out from a pixie. Woo!!!
But lately, I have been noticing a lot of breakage at my roots; it looks a little frizzy once it dries. It's not colored, and I only blow-dry maybe once a month, if that (really only when I style it for an event).
I am currently in a play, and since we open soon, I am concerned what the nightly styling (I have to style it for the show) is going to do to this breakage. Is there anything I can do to help prevent more breaks from happening?

I should note that I do use Suave Humectant shampoo and conditioner, and a Yes To Cucumbers leave-in conditioner.
I also run and dance, so I do have to put my hair in a secure ponytail quite often. I use the Ouchless holders though, which no metal on them. Sometimes I think they still rip my hair though. Is there a better alternative? I don't think hairsticks would hold it securely enough for running or dancing.

You might want to try Amish Hair Pins.

Unfortunately, both dance and theatre are extremely damaging to hair. If you're committed to these things on a long term basis, long hair may not be in your future.

Also, wearing your hair in a ponytail all the time causes tons of breakage, especially if you're using those thin hairties. It's not so much the metal part that damages hair - it's putting the hairtie in the same spot over and over.
You could try things like wider, seamless hairties or satin scrunchies (be warned, however - the latter will slip out of your hair constantly) or using a headband to hold your hair away from your face while you work out since it's still short at the moment.

When/if your hair grows a bit longer, you can twist it up in the back and bobby pin or clip it into place.

Best of luck.

Thanks!
I am not really "committed" to theatre long-term, meaning I am not going into the business professionally, but once I graduate I do plan on continuing with community theatre, maybe one or two shows a year, just to feed my passion :-)
I do tend to use thicker hair ties with no metal, but it's hard for me to use scrunchies because they fall out while I run and dance.
