Hello all. I was wondering if anybody had any tips or opinions on waterproofing wooden hairsticks.

Now, I'm not talking about waterproof to the point where I can shower or swim with them, but it would be nice if there was a way to coat them in something clear and strong enough to be able to use them in damp hair.

I've heard of shellac, but don't have any, and don't know where to get any. Would clear nail polish work? Is there a special paint for this that's "food grade" or something to be sure I'm not leaching plastics or lead into my scalp?

When wanting to waterproof something (such as a hiking stave) without using shellac, I've always used Linseed oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linseed_oil).  I'm not sure how well it would work with hairsticks.  It will change the color of the wood, though.  And it kinda stinks for a while as it cures.
