I went to my stylist for 6 years before she moved away and after a year's search, I can't find anyone in my area that does a decent job. I've given up for now and I'm cutting my own hair...so far, I'm as pleased as when my previous stylist did it!

My hair is thick and has plenty of volume. At the ends, though, it tends to bulk up. It doesn't appear dry or damaged. I don't ever have any split ends, even when I've waited 8 weeks to cut. But my stylist used to thin it out at the ends so it wouldn't be so bulky and however she did it, it did not add any volume. Just what I want to do now.

The scissors she used looked notched - you know, the hold a bunch of hair and scare your client because it looks like you're about to cut several inches but it really just cuts a few hairs?

I went to Sally's today and saw thinning shears, notched shears for volume and blending shears. The descriptions on the thinning and blending shears said they wouldn't add volume but I'm not sure which ones I need. They looked so similar when I looked closely at the blades. I don't want to add volume and the notching shears description said it would add volume so those are out.

I asked the lady at Sally's what the difference was and she just shrugged her shoulders, saying, "I dunno."  :)

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edited to add that the description on the thinning shears and blending shears are virtually identical. They both say something about eliminating unsightly cut lines. My hair doesn't have any unsightly cut lines. I'm just looking to get rid of the bulk about an inch or two from the bottom without adding volume. Thanks!

Hi, eKitchens.  Sorry, I don't know anything about the shears.  I'm sorry you've lost your stylist!  How long is your hair?  I think the thinning shears are most likely what you want.

I'm sorry. I should've mentioned that my hair is about shoulder length now. It doesn't matter how short or long it is, it always gets bulk close to the end.

The thinning shears do seem like the obvious choice to me too but I just wasn't sure since the blades and descriptions on both kinds are so similar.

I also have thick hair and mine always goes east-west when near shoulder length.  Now mine's closer to BSL and while it is thick at the ends it doesn't look so much like a pyramid.  You could just be at one of those lengths that are well, ugly until the hair grows a bit longer.
