Title: Scrunchies, Fashion Do or Don't? Post by Tanai on Aug 20th, 2008 at 4:26pm
I used to use scrunchies as a kid putting them over my ponytail holders because they looked better. I stopped using them mainly because they were all falling apart. I've read, in a magazine, that scrunchies are considered a fashion don't and they are best left worn around the house. I've been thinking of getting scrunchies again, really nice ones, velvet or the like. But I wonder if they really are "out" so I thought I would first ask the ever fabulous ladies on LL ;) as to whether or not they consider scrunchies a fashion don't and have they ever worn them in public, over the age of 13. Thanks everyone! 8-)

Well, I'm 13 right now and I used to wear scrunchies alot before my I chopped my hair off a couple weeks ago. Now it can't fit. I don't know if you'll find this a very useful post since its coming from a 13 year old, but I would just tell you to wear whatever you want in your hair because its nobody's buisness to care what you put in it. It's your hair not theirs. Anyway, thats my 2 cents. Good luck with the whole scrunchie thing! ;D

I think what they are talking about are the really large scrunchies, I've noticed there are some that are much smaller but still have the fabric. If you don't have a ton of hair I say use the smaller ones if you can. To me it looks odd to see someone who doesn't have alot of hair and a big scrunchie, if you have the long hair I think you are probably safe with the larger ones.

Hmm...I'm no trendy, so I definitely can't make the call on what's "in" or "out" for the rest of the world. But a few years ago, I used to wear scrunchies every day to hold my bun in place...and I'm *ahem* well over the age of 13. ;D
My mother is also in her 50's and wears scrunchies when she's out working our horses. So, I mean, I kind of agree with Jilayne: your hair = your business, so whatever you put into it is up to you. Besides, if the rest of you looks fashionable and your scrunchie goes with your outfit, who's even going to notice? |

I say wear what you are comfortable with. If you like to wear your hair in a ponytail alot, scrunchies make sense - they are easier on your hair than just an elastic. If you are concerned about making a fashion faux paux, then get scrunchies that are in basic neutral colors.

I don't care! But I wear the very finelly knitted, tiny ones in black now. Mainly because my hair is still relatively short but they're also more discrete I don't care what others think though. The kind that had the fabric around them are still fine in my book. Even if they're large and quite visible. I used to use them as bun covers when my hair was longer. My MIL uses them over her buns with metal pins, clips etc. because I can't make her understand it's bad for her hair, but I haven't seen other women over 70 who wear any kind of scrunchie.

Thanks for replying everyone! Alright thanks to your responses you have given me the confidence to decide that if I happen across any scrunchies I like that I will buy them and everyone else can go to heck! ;) ;D

I finally bought some slim, black children ones like I've had in the past. Yesterday I put my hair in a low ponytail. Today I put it higher but I still have to use mousse to control the front a bit. I smoothed the mousse out into the lenghts, lightly twisted and rolled the hair around itself and tucked the end into the scrunchy. Put on knit hat, dropped kid off, came back and undid twist bun and now have the cutest little curl on the end of the ponytail. :)

One little note I suppose I could add...scrunchies are fine for casual, daily activities.
However, in serious or high fashion environments, they are not appropriate. |

I just image googled scrunchie and I due to ignorance I've been abusing the word scrunchie. Sorry!
What I use today I guess should be defined as slim, black, jersey hair elastics. You can buy them in other colors including neutral sand and browns, sizes and widths too if that's your thing. I find the jersey elastics to be the gentlest on my hair and the ones that stay in place the best. They loose their shape fast but they're cheap so it doesn't matter that much. Has anyone tried to knit or sew their own scrunchies? This: http://www.global-b2b-network.com/direct/dbimage/50198816/Hair_Elastics.jpg and packs in plastic tubes of this: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2207/2366686995_6f5bc99526.jpg?v=0 is all I can ever find these days. :( There used to be more variations of scrunchies widely available and why no keep something fashionable that doesn't damage your hair? Oh yeah, I know why... ::) While googling I saw many cute homemade scrunchies, both sewn and knitted and I actually think they're really cute and I see no reason why an adult can't use them. Even though I can't knit or sew, I'm all for people showing off their craft skills and individuality. :) |

I crocheted lots of scrunchies over the years. I like to add beads to them to dress them up a bit.

Actually, I've seen Converses at the Grammies before, and rap artists often perform in athletic shoes. Not a scrunchie in sight, however. ;)

I am 23 and I love scrunchies. I don't may much attention to the media in terms of what is fashonable and what is not. I am not one to let a magazine or the like determine what I can wear. Honestly, the decision is up to you. If you like them and want to wear them, then wear them. Everyone has a different style so what you like may not be what someone else likes and vise-versa.

I love scrunchies. If I don't have time to style my hair like being in a hurry, I just throw my hair into a scrunchy. I have a few scrunchies in different colors but now I'm looking for a little more stylish scrunchies...I haven't seen anything I'm looking for. =( But having a quick updo makes some people look casual and cute.

I only have one of those original fabric covered scrunchies left. It's a strange shade of dusty blue velvet but it's great for ending off buns and leaving my hair like that for most of the day. Keeps my hair off my face aside from face framing tendrils and neck and looking tidy throughout the day. Then at the end of the day when hub gets home I have these lovely deep waves. Very romantic if you're sitting down for a dim lit dinner.

I saw a woman who had made a med. high ponytail with a big black scrunchie, pulled the loop of hair partway thru the last loop of the scrunchie, leaving the ends hanging a little, wound the loop around the scrunchie bun-wise, then used a hair stick to keep it all in place. She had dark hair and used a black scrunchie. It really looked good. I tried it with my hair, which is very fine, and it worked great and looked good, too.

Could you post a picture of how you're supposed to do that? Sorry, I'm no good at visualization.
I also pull my hair through the scrunchy when it's in a ponytail the way you used to do with those plastic things with a loop on it. I use a small, thick, black knit "scrunchy" and the scrunchy is pretty much hidden by my hair. I tried this before I had my hair cut into a bob two years ago but I was using a hair elastic that was too thin and made it too hard to pull my hair through. You could keep pulling your hair through the middle of your ponytail and then pin or use a clip/comb on the ends to create a bun or rolled effect. |

I had perms when scrunchies were fashionable. I can tell from my other posts that I've been confusing other hairties with scrunchies. Just to clear up things. This post is about the fabric covered ones. :)
How do other straighties keep their fabric covered scrunchies from sliding off ponytails? Do they really only work for securing buns? I don't have enough hair for buns yet. I'll have to twist my hair too tightly or have loads of ends coming undone. Maybe I just need to get used to that look??? |

:P
Drear, I have never, personally, ever had a scrunchie stay put in a ponytail. The only time I've managed it is if I wound it up so tight, it'd pull on my hair and give me headaches. Oh, and it'd be so scrunched up it wouldn't even look like a scrunchie. If I wanted to use a scrunchie, I'd use it decoratively, over a smaller utilitarian hair tie. I've never had a scrunchie work as a bun holder either. Without pins, my hair falls out. With pins, the scrunchie tries to slip behind the bun in the areas without pins, and starts looking weird. I'm probably just inept. ;D |
Title: Re: Scrunchies, Fashion Do or Don't? Post by Drear on Dec 9th, 2009 at 3:14am
My MIL uses them over buns but I don't know if she secures the bun with something underneath. She uses a lot of metal clasp barettes and hair pins too. She's a generation that took such things forgiven and she still does and I can't get her to understand that it causes damage even if she can't see it.
I suddenly remembered that I used other hair ties under the scrunchies first on the ponytail and then around the bun before placing a scrunchie over the hair tie because I have poor taste :D and think a scrunchie looks better any day than your standard nylon coated (or whatever) hair tie. |

Where did you find the smaller scrunchies? I am finding that my hair is starting to be damaged from regular hair ties, but I really don't like the large fabric scrunchies, they look ridiculous (in my opinion). But I can't seem to find any smaller fabric hair ties anywhere. >:(

Scunci makes smaller scrunchies in black jersey and Ulta cosmetics carries them. Their website is Ulta.com. If you want bright colors, I think you can find them at Walgreen's or WalMart in the kids section.

Thanks :-) I bought some cloth headbands today, and they are small enough to double up and then use as hair ties. They don't have much staying power, so I definitely won't be able to use them when I run or dance, but for around the house chores and every day stuff, it should be enough to keep my hair out of my face if I do choose!
