Title: Hair Shedding! Help! Post by Blondie35 on Aug 9th, 2008 at 7:12pm
Hi all!
I need some advice on what to do about my mother's hair shedding. My mother started noticing her hair shedding rapidly a couple of months ago. She also started noticing her hair shedding from the roots, and since her hair is long about 2 inches of being Bra Strap Length the strands that she sheds are long from roots to ends. I was wondering what can she do to stop the shedding? I will strongly appreciate your assistance! Thank you! Blondie35 |

She might need to get checked out by a doctor. I'd start there.

Shedding can be the result of a number of things.
I'd suggest she check with her doctor if the shedding continues - thyroid issues should not be ignored. |

Ok.
Sakina, your hair is beautiful! I love the waves! Thank you for your reply. Bikerbraid, I totally agree with you on that note about it a could be a number of things. I mainly think she has a poor diet. Throughout the day when she's at home she doesn't hardly eat that much at all. I mean, she'll get up in the morning and get 2 slices of whole wheat toast, and one cup of coffee. Then she'll go throughout the day up until 3 or 4PM and she finally gets something to eat like a normal meal. I kind of think that she has more likely a poor appetite along with poor diet. I mean, both me and her are soooooo concerned about losing weight. So, what she does is to keep her weight down she eats less like is lesser portions. Which is true to some exstinct but I don't think at this time she should be counting calories. Because, she doesn't eat that much, and today she went to the doctor for a thorough check-up, and the doctor told her that she needs to lose weight. Her doctor told her that she is gaining weight instead of losing, and I had it all figured out along time ago but she wouldn't listen. What she would do instead of eating a plate of fruits and vegetables she would eat a hamburger which is good sometimes but not all of the time. I mean, she would only buy fresh fruits and veggies every now and then like once or twice out of the month. I told her, "Mom, this is a no-no. You've gotta eat fruits and veggies daily. Not just once a week, once a monrh, or whatever. Your body needs fruits and veggies 365 days all year round. I could never understand why she doesn't like fruits and veggies. Every time I talk about eating them she always say, "I don't want to eat fruits and veggies all of the time." "Because I would get sick and bored of it." I told her, "Not me." I loveeeeeeeeee fruits and veggies!" "Because, I know that I am putting something good that is good for my body instead of putting all kind of junk foods. Now don't me wrong, she'll eat her poulty like chicken and fish but it's the way she has it cooked, and that is fried. But today her doctor told her that at her height which is 5ft 2" she weighs 171 lbs. I asked mom, "Would you rather weigh 130 lbs rather than 171 lbs or 200 lbs.? She is always complaining that she can't ever find any good-tasting fruits. I told her, "You can find good sweet-tasting fruits all over the place. You just have to know how to pick the best-tasting fruits. I also told her, "In cases where if my doctor told me that I need to lose weight I don't care of finding good-tasting fruits. I care more about intaking lots of fruits and veggies as far as my health is concerned not about good-tasting. I'm sorry yall if I have gotten off topic but I just had to share..... |

::sigh:: I know this pattern all too well. I had fallen into the horrible eating habits of fast food, not enough fruits and veggies, not enough exercise. Before I knew it, I was 75 pounds overweight. (Well, it really took about 20 years, but i was in denial, so i didn't "notice" it.)
When I decided I HAD to lose weight and start eating healthy, I found a program called Seattle Suttons Healthy Eating. It is available in the upper midwest. It provides 21 meals a week. The food is all fresh - not frozen. The meals rotate over 5 weeks, so there is a lot of variety. No preservatives, low fat, low sodium, just 1200 calories of healthy food. It tastes great too! You pick up the food twice a week, each meal is individually packaged, so it is easy to take to work, or whatever. Pop it in the microwave and you have a healthy meal in 2 minutes. My weight loss has not been fast, but I feel great, and I don't feel deprived or hungry. I know I can keep doing this. I've lost 50 pounds and am still losing. I firmly believe that eating regular meals that are balanced is key to being healthy. Just reducing the amount of food you take in is not enough. If you restrict your intake too much, your body starts to retain fat because it thinks you are starving yourself. It has the opposite effect that you think! Fluids are also important. Water, lots of water. You need it to rid the body of the toxins. I hope you and your mother can find the right method to lose the weight and you reach your goals. |

Make sure she eats protein, fats, dairy and multi-grains. They help with the basic building blocks of growing hair (amino acids).
