So I was just looking on the internet for new hairstyles for my butt-length, pin straight hair, and I was reading a "salon tips" article and I came across this little disgusting tip..

"Secret #8: Don't go long and blah  You know the look -- hair that's gone just a little too long, has no style and is just plain, well, blah. We've all been there (I was there earlier today until I visited my stylist Antonio at Eva Scrivo Salon in NYC). What this hairstyle says to the world is "I am low-maintenance and can't be bothered with regular salon visits." This is fine if you aren't interested in making an impression on anybody and feeling fabulous. But it isn't sexy. Cut in some layers, add some bangs, get some highlights. Just get yourself to a salon, pronto."

I was so mad about reading it that I just had to share it with other people who also do very much NOT agree that their hair is "blah".  Outrageous!

Argh!!  I totally agree with you Tara!  That's a typical salon response...just to get you to pay a whole heap of money for a high maintenance cut.

Us natural guys and girls need to stick together!!  Me personally, since making the decision to stop abusing my locks, I've felt free and happy.  

Long hair is fabulous and I'm always impressed when I see someone with beautiful locks.  It's a sign of the commitment that somebody has made to growing and maintaining a healthy mane...or having very good hair genes  :D*

Yeah, that entire article was probably written by a salon owner!

As much as the industry wants us to believe that we longhairs just aren't attractive, it's absolute crap. They use trendiness to their advantage so they can make money.
   The truth is that every woman with trendy, chopped, layered, highlighted hair wishes that she had long, healthy hair.
   And I honestly don't know any guy who prefers short, trendy hair on their partner. They either prefer long hair or don't have a preference.

At least she called long hair a hairstyle.  I, however, think it says very clearly: "I am not a sheep!  I don't care what you think!"  :P

What do you expect of salon owners or people who are endorsed by the hair industry ::)  I don't want bangs, don't want any dye near my hair any time soon but I do want layers at the sides and very bottom FOR MYSELF!  It's my choice and it's got nothing to do with a trend, anything or anyone else!  My hair is pin straight and I like it that way, even when I attempt to dress 50s retro/vintage which is a period where they didn't like straight hair but I live now so I have the freedom to do whatever I want.

The truth is they're ignorant cowards who either just ride the waves absentmindedly or don't dare to go their own way.  

Get whatever you want and if your salon/hairdresser doesn't respect that, then keep trying a new one until you find one who respects your choice.  

It makes me mad when people tell me what I am or am not! >:(

...got it done!  Very satisfied.  She really understood what I explained.  I told her that my next step goal is APL maybe with some layering, no bangs.  She cut it so you can hardly see she's taken any of the length off and the layers are so that I can either choose to keep them adjusted into my hair or cut them away with each trim :)  She just took my instructions and did the best to make it work.  Not once did she try to convince me that shorter hair, more bangs, a right part, and more layers higher up would look better like so many other hairdressers have in the past ::)  

My mother-in-law told me my long hair made me look like an old-fashioned "school marm" (I'm sure the glasses don't help) and that was not my personality.  She said I should cut it in a younger style.  My mother agreed.  Then I went to a women's leadership conference this weekend and no less than four people told me how gorgeous my hair was.  So I told them all to tell that to my mother, who was at the conference with me.  

Our roommate said, "Don't cut your hair.  It is your signature."  I had noticed that many of the ladies there had a "signature" style.  Why can't mine include long hair?

yeah I agree Salons just say that crap to get your money, and so you will follow the same styles as EVERYONE ELSE in the world!

My sister has the current "Bob" which is so popular right now, and literally every time I see her she tries to talk me into cutting my hair.  She's the kind of person who simply can not leave her poor hair alone, its always cut, dyed, straightened and the like, she's a plastic Barbie!  And I always ask her "Why?" and of course she never has a real answer.  Everyone else in my family though is really supportive as we all have long hair.  My father's goes down to the middle of his back, as does my mom's, and my siblings all but the Barbie!

For the most part I get startled/positive comments about my long hair, but there's always that occasional "Cut your hair!"  I think it's just because they are jealous, we have something they don't have, and it isn't something you can go buy, and it isn't something you can immediately obtain, and that always pisses off the rich/trendy people.

Salons...what do they know? :P

I had an interesting experience on my recent bike trip.  While waiting in line for dinner one night, a woman behind me commented on my hair.  I had just washed it and it was down and loose (I bike with it braided).  She was oooh-ing and ahhh-ing over the length and condition.  She asked all kinds of questions about how I cared for it, what products I used and how I got it so shiny.  Come to find out she is a hair stylist.  She was telling me that in school they are told that hair that is longer than shoulder length CANNOT be healthly.  Therefore they are trained to encourage their clients to have styles that are shorter.  

I showed her several different ways I could style my hair (bun, figure-8, french braid).  She was shocked at how quickly I could do the styles and how nice they looked.  (Keep in mind, I had no mirror and no comb with me!!)  She told me that she was convinced that she was taught wrong and would no longer try to convince people that they HAD to cut their hair for it to look nice.  But the best comment she made was.... "I always thought long hair was just for young people, but you've just proven to me that a 40 year old can wear long hair and look great."    :o :o :o 40 year old!!!???? I told her she was off by 15 years and she about fell over.   MADE MY DAY!  :D

I get the feeling that hairdressers don't learn about the basic structure of hair and different hair types structure.  If they learnt the basic scientific stuff first, they wouldn't be so gullible later when learning to cut and style.

It's not that bad here actually.  The Danish hairdresser education is four years and is considered one of the best in the world.  

If stylists were taught correctly, the salon industry as a whole would go bankrupt.  ::)

While I really do believe that there are women who no matter how healthy their hair could be, wouldn't want long hair and I accept that some are quite happy with their tortured mop, or because they embrace their hair structure have a different aestetic preference that may never grow long but can be healthy anyway, it's the misinformation and spreading of it that keep some from making decisions they wouldn't otherwise make (shorter hairstyle, more styling, etc.) that upsets me!
