Title: Can Natural Products Produce Lather?
Post by La Diosa on Apr 29th, 2008 at 9:21pm
I bought some soap from Hugo Naturals, which are supposed to be all natural...but they produce lather. :-?  Is there anything in the following ingredients that would create lather?

Kosher Vegetable Glycerin, Organic Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Sodium Palm Kernalate (Palm) Oil, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Distilled Water, Sodium Cocoate (Coconut), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Sorbitol, Sorbitan Oleate,Glycine Soja (Soybean) Protein, Tocopherol (Natural Vitamin E), Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Organic Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Chlorophyllin (Natural Color), Bixa Orellana Annatto (Natural Color),  May Contain Whole Flowers and Herbs

I don't know the answer to your question.   I find the soap and lotion to be drying to my skin.

I'd call them and ask; surely they have an 800 number.

Sorbitol is a humectant and emulsifier, I would guess this might be contributing to the lather.

Thanks for your responses ladies! :D

Sorbitol...that's funny because for some reason that ingredient stuck out to me.  Yesterday, I'd asked my husband what it was and he said that it was a sweetener. :-?

Anyway, it's good to know that sorbitol would be the cause of the lathering.  I was afraid that perhaps they snuck in some sulfates.  Thanks Bikerbraid. :)

Coconut and sunflower oils are very lathering.

Better late than never, I hope? TripAtlas.com: Sorbitol is often used in modern cosmetics as a humectant and thickener. Also known as 'glucitol', is a sugar alcohol the body metabolises slowly. It is obtained by reduction of glucose changing the aldehyde group to an additional hydroxyl group hence the name ''sugar alcohol''.

Your husband is correct when he says it's a sweetener; it's often used as a sugar substitute in some diet foods, sugar-free gum, etc. It doesn't contribute to the lather in a shampoo, just supposedly attracts moisture and keeps it mixed (thickened and emulsified).

I've plugged my organic hemp oil soap & shampoo bar elsewhere, but it lathers beautifully without any strange ingredients. The oils, particularly the coconut oil, are known as contributing good lather to soaps.
