Title: Hair is shedding and itching! HELP!
Post by dan on Oct 4th, 2007 at 5:41pm
Hi everyone,
My hair itches in the morning before I wash it. More importantly is that it's really starting to shed badly! When a hair falls out it has a little white thing on the end. Must be the root. Is there anyone with the same problem with a solution! I don't understand and am more than a little concerned! I take vitamins and eat right. I don't get it. Any advice is appreciated in advance! My doctor gave me Propecia and it worked. But a few months later it started to "shed" again. I've never previously had a hair loss problem. Again, if this has happened to someone else, I would be more than grateful for your reply. Confused, confused, confused.

Sorry to hear your hair troubles, Dan.  Unfortunately I have no advice to offer other than to suggest you go back to the doctor.  Some people find shedding increases in the fall.  You might need to have your hormone levels checked.  Wish I could be more help.  :-/

Welcome, to LongLocks.  :)

Seasonal changes can cause more shedding than usual.  Other causes can include hormonal changes, stress, and thyroid problems.  You don't mention your age so I can't tell if male pattern baldness could be the issue, but since the doctor gave you propecia previously and it worked, this could be the issue.  If your shedding continues, I'd suggest returning to the doctor to make sure you don't have any health issues that could be causing it.

In the meantime, eating healthy will help minimize the shedding.  You might also try a vinegar rinse after shampooing.  This can help remove product buildup that might be causing the follicles to get clogged.

Good luck!

Wow! Thanks for the resposes! I am 44 and it isn't male pattern baldness cause it's all over my head. I will try the vinegar rinse for sure. Someone told me that it might be lack of iron. I dont eat alot of red meat, so I'm going to get some iron pills. I had my thyroid checked and a whole lot of other things and I'm okay. It's just the way it's coming out isn't like normal hairloss. Again, I am just hoping that someone else with this problem has found a solution! Hoping is the operative word. I keep reminding myself that there are bigger problems out there, but when your head itches and you pluck hair out of the air when you dry it, or off your hand when you itch your scalp, on my sheets whatever, it pre-occupies you and worries you. I just think "What if there is a solution and I just can't think of it!" I just want to say that YOUR RESPONSES REALLY MEAN ALOT. It's a perfect example that there are people out there that really want to help other people. It is sooo appreciated!
                                THANK YOU SO MUCH
P.S. I have had regular blood tests. Who would you go to, to have your HORMONES CHECKED? That's good information.
                          Thank you again!

Doctors usually do the hormone checks - however, this is not typcially an issue for men - as your hormones do not fluctuate like women's do.  :P

The vinegar rinse just might take care of the itchies.  Typically an itchy scalp is due to stuff (shampoo, conditioner, other hair products) building up on the scalp.  You might also try using a clarifying shampoo every now and then.  This could also help with the itchies.
