Title: sunscreen for hair
Post by LaRe on May 15th, 2007 at 11:21am
I'm trying to let my hair grow out, but I spend alot of time in the sun in the summer. Does anyone know any good products to use for sunscreen to protect my hair? I can't use anything too heavy, because my hair will get greasy and limp. Any suggestions?

When I used salon products, I only used products from the Kerastase line. All of the ones I used, including the sunscreen for hair  were very good products.  The sunscreen, though, was more geared towards beach-usage, so maybe a bit more shinier/oilier than you would want.
How about using a nice scarf/bandana/hat?

I tend to just cover my hair with a hat or scarf.  Wind is as much a problem for me as sun, so the hat/scarf helps me with both.

Speaking of hats... I love hats, but with my longer hair now I find it hard to put them on and keep them on! I like to wear the wider brims in the summer.  Suggestions?

LOL - the first thing I thought of was HAT PINS!  ;D  My grandmother wore her hair in buns or french rolls all the time and kept her hats on with hat pins.  Personally I've never mastered the art of keeping a hat on via a hat pin.

I've picked hats that have an opening in the back so that I can either have my bun or braid thru the hole.  This helps secure the hat on my head.  You do have to be a bit more creative, but don't give up!

Are you talking about baseball caps?  I was trying to picture a straw hat (think like a boater) with a hole for the hair.  LOL!

The hatpin has to be a bit on the long side.  The pin is supposed to go through hat, hair, hat and then put a clutch on the end.  Most modern hat pins are a bit too short to accomplish this.

But I just inherited a couple long hatpins from my step-grandmother.    They are freakishly long.  The pin part of one (not counting the ornament on top) is 6 3/4 inches long, the other is a tad short of 10 inches.  Her hatpins were divided among all the female heirs, and I don't remember seeing one under 5 inches long.  But they've lost their clutches. Not sure if I'll try to use them or just make some.  (I found some 6 inch blank hatpins.  Now have to get beads to put on them.)

Or you can use ribbons to keep a hat on.  A couple stitches to the sweat band will keep the ribbon on, you just tie it under your chin or under your hair.

I have seen some hats where elastic was used to attach two small plastic combs to the sweatband.  The combs are situated over the ears.  I have such a hat and it does stay on.  But I'm not a good enough seamstress that I can attach elastic to the sweatband or inside lining of a hat.

(^_^)/
