Hi FataMorgana, I have heard sleeping with warm olive oil works. Oil your hair like hot oil treatment, cover with plastic shower cap, then a towel. Go to bed, get up next morning and wash as usual. This has worked for some the students here in school. It is less harmful to your hair and scalp plus it kills the bugs. I have never had lice so I have not tried this myself. Give it a try. Then maybe your friend wont have to cut their hair.

You are welcome ;). By using the oil, it will suffocate the bugs. There still might be nits(eggs) to remove. They will be on the hair strands. Look for them. Most nits are just empty shells, I am not sure of the ratio of empty nits to live ones. None of our children have ever had to shave their hair off after getting lice. It is time consuming to remove the nits and usually you need someones help. Cant see them all, or get them all. Also, you may have to do the oil more than once. Remember to tell your friend to wash all bedding and clothing too (hot water, purex). If your friend has cloth covered furniture at home or work, these will need to be treated also. Lots of work, but that is the only way to get rid of the infestation. Hope all of this helps. Let me know.

Hi FataMorgana, Also, I forgot to tell you. If the olive oil doesnt work, there are chemicals on the market which you can get. They arent expensive either. Here at school, some parents have found that alternating between the oil treatment and the chemical do good also. It just takes a little longer. Try the oil first, then if that doesnt work, use the chemicals, then another oil treatment. The chemicals can be very hard on the hair and scalp. It is meant to kill the bugs. For some people the chemicals work the best, this maybe the option for your friend. Best of luck. Have patience, and dont panic.

You are very welcome, FataMorgana. Let me know of the final outcome. Remember, you dont have to cut or shave the head bald. Also, DO NOT EVER share your combs, brushes, hairtoys with anyone. That is one the best methods of controling lice. Hope all this info is not confusing to you. Have a great weekend.

Hi FataMorgana, One more thing on this subject. I just found out that lice and fleas are of the same family. Get a bug bomb for fleas, use it throughtout your whole house. This will kill any infestation that could be in your home. Just follow the directions and you will be fine.
PS For your friend with the dreads, If the nits cannot be removed from each strand of hair, then of course, unfortunately it will have to be shaved :'(. Otherwise reinfestation will keep occuring. Debr |

I had them when I was 10 - mum rinsed my hair with diluted tea tree oil and then wrapped it up so the vapours suffocated them, an also had a [b]lot[/b} of conditioner on so the nits came off easier when we used the nit comb. Conditioner/combing needs to be done for at least 10 days (the length of their life span). Unfortunately I also had about 6 inches cut off to make the combing easier. Hope it isn't necessary for you though
Good luck! |

Thanx again Debr!!IŽll try the bomb if I can find it.Sounds like fun...
Brittish brunette:Thank you for your tip.The only thing is that Teetree oil is so damn expensive..I guess I have to buy it anyway. I think I donŽt have lice because I do the coconut oil treatment every other day:)))))) I really appriciate all help :) :) Maybe IŽll come back if it doesnŽt help. Swedish hugs! |
