Summer sun can damage your hair.  The lighter your natural color the more prone you are to the sun lightening your hair.  This will dry out your hair.  Be sure to wear a hat or scarf when outside in the sun.  This will protect your hair (and your skin!).

Wind will also dry out the hair and cause splits.  Keep your hair out of the wind by braiding it or wearing a scarf to help minimize the effects.
