I was 22 this year when i found long hair boards, if it had not been for baords like this i would stil be fighting with my hair. I just want to thank you all as i have had so many tears cryed over my hair from bad colour to bad cuts and now i never have to worry again.


Not only have i gone natural with my hair but also my skin and makeup to i feel so great to be free from the influential media of this world and just be me.

I've grown my hair long (at least mid back) 3 different times, once starting when I went to college.  That lastest until I was pregnant with my son.  The second time was after my first back surgery... that time I only grew it to mid back, then cut it back to a pixie.  And now my 3rd (and final) time.  I started growing my hair out after a bad cut and a forced change in hair sylist.  I figure I'll leave it long for as long as I still enjoy having it long.  If/when I decide I am ready to cut my hair this time, I will again cut it very short and I am sure it will stay that way.  However, I have no real plans to make that drastic move yet.  ;)

Let's see...the first time I was around 10 years old, the second time I was 23 or 24, and now this time, begun last year when I was 43.   :)  Currently at BSL--HOOrah!  Long Locks is the best site, isn't it?!  

Although I have wanted long hair since the Beatles, I didn't possess the, um, backbone until I was 31. Three women in my life over the years didn't approve.

First, of course. Mom. I, at least, successfully negotiated a compromise for over-the-ears, collar-length.

Second was, my (then) wife. She was a hairstylist with other ideas.

A girlfriend ('89-91) believed long hair was for rock stars. I started my quest for long locks the day she dumped me.

Since then, I have been in relationships that not only appreciated my look but discouraged me from cutting on several occasions. I did buzz it once (2000); just wanted a different look. Short hair didn't feel or look like me, though. A couple weeks later, I started over.

The most recent time that I "decided" to grow my hair long was after a terrible colouring accident when I was 20. During the week between my wedding and honeymoon, I decided to take my natural waist-length, light brown locks to deep raven black using a Level 2 (demipermanent) hair colour. But when the colour took permanently, I had the length cut off to my shoulders, then slowly grew and cut the last of the coloured part out.

It was then that I decided to 1.) NEVER colour my hair again, and 2.) to take much better care of it while it grew back out. So it wasn't so much a decision to grow my hair long as a commitment to reclaim the long hair that I once had. Slowly but surely, it's coming along...  :-/

Ummm, is this the third or fourth time???  Anyway, I can't remember exactly anymore.  This time I started about 2 years ago.  First year when very slowly as I had regular trims to get most of the layers out.  That would have put me about 47.

Lets see.... hmmm I think I was 38 at the time. ;)

First time I was 17, and off to college... cut it when I got married at 20.  Next time I was 28, cut it after birth of my last child at 33.  This time I was 55, and I'm not cutting!

I was 9, I think.  I started with growing the length out but kept my bangs short.  I later decided to grow out my bangs so I could have my hair all one length.  I had to cut my hair to shoulder length at 12 (when my bangs had reached my shoulders), so I could grow it all out together, and I haven't looked back.   :)

When I was fourteen. And now I'm fifteen.  ;D
But I've had pretty long (and much...) hair since I was about 9 or something; my mom thinks my quest for hiplenght is a way of compensating for having reaaaaally little hair when I was very-very-very widdle.  :D

After getting my hair cut short every summer for camp, I decided around 12 years old to have long hair. By my hs graduation it was almost to my waist. I kept it long until the second child, then cut it short again. I haven't cut it short since then, about 24 years. I have my hairdresser trim it about every 3-4 months (maybe 1/2 an inch). Both my grandmothers had really long hair. I don't plan to cut it ever!

I've had my hair long, short, and every length in between.  I really can't remember.  I do remember at some point in my mid-20's noticing that my hair had reached the middle of my back, but it wasn't a deliberate choice.

This is the first time I have "chosen" to grow my hair long, and I made it in February of 2005 when I was 40.  I am almost to BSL now, and only have a few inches to go to surpass the length I had before.

I was 25 when I started to grow. This is my first time. When I was a kid, my hair was about BSL length- it just would not grow longer (due to bad haircare). When I was 16, my stylist convinced me to chop it all off, and for the next decare, my hair was of different lengths of shortish- pixie most of the time, but also bald, and a couple of times barely shoulder length.
   When I turned 25, I decided that I didn't want to follow my "bald in the summer, let grow during the winter"-cycle but wanted to have long hair when I hit 30. My idea of "long" was BSL-ish, as I thought it might not grow longer. So, I started to grow, totally ignorant of finesses of longhair care. When I found this board, my hair had made it a bit past shoulder length again.
   I love having long hair- I think I've got short cuts out of my system for good.

What is BSL???  I guess from reading all of your posts..that deciding to grow it long at age 38 isn't impossible!!?? I want it to be long enough that it kind of covers my boobs..I think that would be the mid to lower back area??

Hi Peachygirl!  BSL  Means bra strap length.  Growing your hair at 38 is not impossible, thats when I started! Now I'm 40 with 25 1/2 inch hair, of which is not quite boob covering yet ::)

Thanx Lisabelle!!! Your hair is gorgeous;) I got a magazine today with tons of cute short hair cuts..and since I had to cut my hair short to start all over, I decided to give it a great cut!!

I just decided to grow my hair long this year...so I still have a long way to go, but I'm excited about it. I'm also tired of the few haircuts I've had that were all short, so I'm looking forward to having enough to braid! I'm starting at age 25 with a pixie cut...and counting now.

Hi roomtogrow!! Keep me posted on your hair growing out..I'm actually thinking of cutting mine shorter before I start growing it out.

In my forties...............although I have always wanted it long.  I plan on keeping mine long from now on.

Hi everyone, thought I would get in on this too.  I grew my hair for the first time at age 19ish.  Until then I wore it either very short, or to my shoulders.  Then I went to work, had money so I started growing it out and having it straightened.  At age 30ish, I cut it cuz I thought I couldnt have long hair after age 30.  Then at age 43ish, I started growing it until it stops.  I had to start that by growing it, cutting it, until it all reached one length.  Other than a few trims here and there, and continual dusting, I havent cut it.  It now reaches the tops of my thighs, is very thick, and I am letting go until it is done. I am hoping for at least knee length when my hair decides to quit growing.  I have learned sooo much about hair care on this board, I am gonna stay here too!

I've always wanted long hair.. I kept having setbacks though, either someone encouraged me to cut it, or cut it without my permission, when I was little, or I had a wild hair and tried to fight off a lack of self confidence with a haircut (it only made things worse!) Most recently, when I was 15, I had my hair chopped to chin length(it was supposed to be shoulder length, but the stylist didn't listen to what I was trying to tell her) Now I'm very specific if I even let someone near my hair with sharp things - "Take off more than an inch and I'll bite you. Hard. " Now at 19, I've got 31'' long hair, if I understand the measuring system properly. (hairline back, over the top of the head, and down to the end, right?) that's actually almost exactly half my height! :)

You measuring method is consistent with how most do it.  Congrats on reaching your current length. and now taking control of your hair!

i decided when i was about 5 that since most of my 13 aunts had long long hair and i thought they were the most beautiful people in the world that i'd always have long hair.  i've chopped it a few times and done some bad things to it over the years, but 23 years later, here i am, still with waist length hair.

I was very very young when I wanted to grow my hair long, but my mother never let me and always had my hair cut to chin length. I hated it. But I was about 7 when I moved to my fathers and he gave me the freedom to grow it. I'm now 16, and still growing it, there have been a few bad trims when some girls probably had no boody idea what the heck they were doing ¬_¬

But I havent measured my hair in inches yet, I'm gonna try and attempt that ASAP!

My goal is to grow it to at least my knees! I'd love my hair to be that long!!!!!!!

I am 38...well 39 in a couple of weeks.  I had long hair as a kid...down to my waist...but then did short hair for years.  I am just starting to grow it now.  I am not quite BSL but I hope to go classical in time.

when i was very young 4 or 5ish i had at least waist length hair. when i was 8 or 9ish i myself decided to cut it to chin length. what a disaster. my hair was soooo poofy and i looked horrible. i then decided i wanted it long again and started growing. at age 14 i decided to cut my hair to chin length again because i didnt want to take care of long hair. after that i kept it short for a few years then at 16 it had reached shoulder length. i then cut it back again to chin length to get rid of the last of the bad hair. since then ive been growing. now im 22 and im just shy of BSL.

I had my hair long when I was in my early 30s then cut it short. I am now 52 years old and started growing it long again three years ago. It now is about 4 inches from my rearend. My hair has always grown fast and it still does even at this age. I have no plans to cut it again except to trim it.So I will be one of those old ladies with very long hair and loving it.  

I was about 49 years old when I decided I did not care what people thought about my hair anymore!  It has been long ever since....really long for a MAN!  i have had it as long as 36" ...now it's about 32".

I did try and grow my hair long when I was about 12 years old but soon gave up and cut it back into a bob - I wish I'd had the patience to stick it out!  I decided to grow my hair long again about 18 months ago - when I was 24 - I've obviously got much more patience now!!

I first grew my hair out in 8th grade, and had butt-legth hair through high school. I didn't know what I was doing though, so my hair was a frizzy damaged mess that was always confined to a ponytail. I then shaved it down to half an inch, and have been following the good hair tips on this site for a couple years with my above shoulder hair. I have recently decided to grow my hair out again, much to the shagrin of my hubby, who likes my 1/2 inch hair best.  ::) I hope my hair is much more managable this time around.

I started growing it in April 2006 after a pixie cut. I have never had hair past my shoulders in my life= so I am determined to finally have long hair for the first time!!!!

My first time I was 5 and refused to cut my hair until 6th grade when I decided it was a pain and not that pretty anyways (mostly because I refused to take good care of it).  Now I am 15 and waiting (sorta) patiently for that lost length!

I was probably five the first time and I've with varying degrees of success decided to grow my hair out at different stages of my life and this last time my decision was made as late as March this year.

I know this is an older post, but I've decided to reply anyways. Right now i am 13, and have just very recently decided to grow out my hair. It was always a couple inches below my shoulders, but because of my decision to get bangs that I absolutely hated, I cut it to my chin. Now it is all one length, and I plan to grow it out to waist length. :)

When I was a teenager, I also grew out bangs...and I did make it to waist length.  ;)

I have said many times that I am growing out my hair. The difference between now and then is I no longer use harsh things on my hair, like my straightening iron and blow dreyer.
The BIGGEST difference between then and now, is this time I am going to actually do it.

I think I was... 16 or 17. This was all do to overexposure to LotR and having several friends with long hair. All that makes you want to get some yourself. However I did cut it at 17 and again at 19 but I've let it grow out with only regular trims since then. It's back to mid-back.  :) And I'm now 21.

This time, 30.  For some reason, I told myself I would 'reward' myself with a pixie cut when I got down to my pre-pregnancy weight--no wonder I haven't done it yet!

I've had long hair since I was about 12 or so.  I'm 51 now.  Through those many years, it wasn't so much a conscious decision to grow my hair, as it was simply not bothering to go get it cut.  Only now have I turned on to the idea of actually working at growing it.  I watch a lot of Indian Bollywood movies, and seeing all those beautiful women with their flowing long hair has given me the dream of having super long hair too.  Mine is bra strap length right now, so I have quite a long way to go!

When I was a child my mom would always have us (4 sisters) in pixie cuts every summer. When I was about 11/12 I was allowed to keep my hair long (she didn't have to deal with it then). I usually kept it long. When I was a senior in high school I cut it short then let it grow out. It has been long most of my life. The last time I cut it was January 2003. My third sister was going through chemo so I cut it off in support. It's been growing back ever since and with trims I now have 30".

I decided to be the old lady with the long white hair. ;) (I'll be 54 in March)

I could never understand the people who think long hair is harder to care for than short.

I have had long-ish hair (BSL?) most of my life. I got my first pixie cut towards the end of 2007. I spent all of 2008 growing it, got to shoulder length by the end of 2008 then cut it to pixie length again (d'oh!!) January 2009. Now I've decided to grow it long again because I have tried short hair and I am not liking it anymore. I'm 22 now. It will probably be 2 years before it is an ideal length for me.  8-)
