Title: Hairstyles for Surgery Post by bio_muse on Jul 30th, 2006 at 9:58pm
Hi, everyone,
I recently started my rotation in Ob/Gyn. For the Gyn part of the rotation, I am in surgery for a good portion of the day wearing scrubs, shoe covers, and a bouffont cap to cover my hair. I have discovered that I am really going to have to think about what hairstyle I wear in order to fit all of my hair into the cap. I know I can do a crown braid to get it all up in there (haven't done it yet... I'm still trying to get used to getting up before the crack of dawn), but I like to mix up my hairstyle every once in a while. Does anyone have experience with this? Can you please give me some suggestions for what to do with my hair? Thanks! |

I have seen people with long hair in the hospital wearing 2 bouffont caps. They would wear their hair down, put on one cap with their length stuff into it, and pull the cap up to the crown almost like a snood. Then with another cap they would wear it the usual way covering the forehead. It is secure and doesn't make you look to smashed at the end of the day.

Well...I don't have any personal experience needing to wear a boufant cap for work, however I do have a lot of hair. I suggest making multiple buns, maybe a french braid where you fold up/tuck the ends back up to your head. Also, perhaps, an upside down french braid that ends in a bun at the crown of your head.
How long is your hair? I hope you find some comfortable solutions. Good luck with the getting up super early thing!!! |

I'm usually the one on the table during surgery and everyone already has their caps on, so I have no idea how they wear their hair! ;D
However, a suggestion I would make is to braid your hair, then pin it into a bun. This would keep the hair well contained and still look nice when the cap is removed. |

Well, it's the end of the school year, and my clinical rotations have brought me back to the surgery suite once again. In the intervening months, I have discovered that the best hairstyle (for me, at any rate) for being on-call & in surgery is a pair of french (or dutch) braided pigtails. It keeps my hair under control, and I can sleep in it without it looking horrible when I get up. One of the patients even told me how cute my hair was! :)
