Title: Spammed again and again and again
Post by bikerbraid on Jun 16th, 2006 at 10:45am
Thanks to Galadriel, we were notified of another spammer.  I hope not too many of you saw the "enhanced" photo that was included in the post.  After deleting it 51 times, I don't care to see it again.  :P

As a result of this rash of spamming, we are imposing a posting limit.  Members will be able to post once per minute.  For some of you who are fast readers and typers, you may receive a message that you must wait to post.  I hope you all understand our need to add this limit.  We hope that it will frustrate the spammers and they will move on to another site rather than spending an hour hitting all of our forums rather than the 16 minutes this last one took to post 51 times.

Edited to correct a typo

Don't worry- I didn't see the content of the spam post, only that our all our forums were full of same post with "familiar-sounding" title.

Seriously, some people need a good hobby. Why don't they start watching as their hair grows or something  :P

Yep - a sure sign of a post you don't want to open, is when you see it in every forum.  I give the guy some credit - he at least made the topic title relevant (Exclusive pictures of Jennifer Anniston's Long Hair).  Needless to say, there were NO pictures of Jennifer and what hair was shown, was NOT long.  :P

Unfortunately, for some people, spamming sites is their hobby.

Don't give the spammer any credit, BB. "Relevant" titles are easy to spot and are among the oldest tricks in the book when it comes to spamming.
And unfortunately, depending on how this particular spammer operates, your one post per minute feature might not work. Just a heads up.

Sorry to hear that it happened again (I wasn't awake for this one, fortunately) but ya know...it's a little bit like auto theft: if someone is really determined, there really is no way to stop it from happening. The best you can do is take care of it as quickly as possible when it does.

I hear ya, Angel Spun.  I know we can never totally prevent the spamming, but if we can make it more difficult, they may move on faster and not hit us as hard.

It is because of these deranged people that we have to have moderators on this forum at all!  Otherwise everyone here is so nice and respectful - a real joy to read everyone's posts.

I cant believe it happened again.I didnt know it had happened before until I saw the post spammed again.

I think the posting limit is a good idea. But it seemed like the last time they did this there was no time difference between posts.I took like 20 minutes to post over there's.And there posts said the same time.More like they hacked in rather than joining like a regular person.
I was also really really tired. So I could definitely be wrong.

Based on the time the culprit became a member and the time stamps on the posts, they were manually creating their posts (with cut and paste to make it fast).  Plus they were not able to post in the forums that are restricted.  I'm sure there might be a way to hack in to do the posts, but I've not seen that happen here.

A BIG THANK YOU to our moderators!!!!  I haven't seen the spam, don't want to and I'm sorry the moderators have to see it ad nauseum to get rid of it.

Hey BB and Sakina, thanks for responding so fast. We're also lucky to be a relatively small community that attracts less spam and trolls than other boards.

I don't like spam. It's WAY too salty.   ;D

Thanks to the moderators for keeping the board spam free!

Being from the state that brings you Spam, this is a constant dilemma - to Spam or not to spam........ but I will go along with you - it is salty to eat.  As for the spam we get here, it is distasteful on soooo many levels!   ;D  ;)

And for those of you not familiar with Spam, check out their website (yes, it is safe to visit THIS Spam site!).

Spam, AGAIN?! Ack, I'm glad I missed this one. Thank you for getting rid of it, BB!

As for the edible Spam, I don't know what it is about Spam and Hawaii, but we love the stuff. Spam and Portugese sausage with some scrambled eggs and rice is gooooooooood. I guess we like cholesterol-laden, heart attack inducing food. :P ::)

Heheh there was a special on the Food Network all about Spam.  And they did show a Spam festival in Hawaii!  There is also some place on the mainland where Spam is popular, but I forget where.  The dishes they made actually didn't look so bad, and it might be less salty mixed with other food.

Spam is also big in the Philippines, as well as Velveeta cheese blocks.  I think it's because it was actually cheaper than getting real quality meats.  Families tend to be very large there, so buying meat can be expensive.

My MIL hates spam.  That was all the meat she had to eat for  years during WWII in England. :P
