Title: Uganda
Post by PreciousLocks on Jun 11th, 2006 at 9:56pm
I've been back for 3 weeks now.  I'm still evaluating my response to that awesome experience.
I went on a team of 7.  We were working with church leaders there on two conferences for church leaders and pastors.
What can I tell you -- we are totally and completely spoiled and clueless about how most of the world lives.  But my friends there are absolutely amazing.  There is much grief, sorrow, sadness but they live with a sense of hope and trust in their Lord that supersedes all of that.
The country itself is breathtakingly lovely.  Uganda is/could be the breadbasket of Africa.  Anything/everything can grow there.  Up to 60% of the food gets thrown away because they do not have dependable electricity or transportation systems to store and move the food.  They have made progress, but it is slow and has frequent set-backs due to unrest around some of the borders with other countries and due to corruption within their government.
One friend who was exiled during the reign of Idi Amin reported that when he returned to Uganda after Amin was defeated, the country had been stripped of so much that it had regressed 50 years.
Okay, I'm now going to see if I can upload a few pics.

Most of my pictures are of people I met.  I won't post them because I don't have permission to plaster their faces on the internet.

No long hairs there!  Most everyone kept their hair short, short!  A few did some extensions, often using a brown yarn.  Sometimes the women had rows of braids.

Hope you've enjoyed the short visit ;D

Welcome back, PreciousLocks!  Thanks for sharing your pictures.  I especially love to see the animals.
Everytime I've come home from another country, even European ones I'm overwhelmed with the stuff we have here available every day.  I usually have to stay out of the mall for months after getting back, its too much for me to handle.  Same with the grocery stores.

And always, with all of its imperfections, there's no place like home.  I'm greatful I live in the USA.

How long is your hair now?

Nice to have you back, Precious Locks! :)  Wow, those pictures are amazing!! It must have been so neat to see elephants, monkeys, etc. outside of a zoo setting.

I don't know much about Uganda, but from the photos and what you wrote, it does look like the country has a lot of potential. I hope the people there get the they need resources to improve their lives. Thanks for sharing some of your experiences!

Welcome back, PreciousLocks.  :)

Glad you enjoyed your trip. The pix are lovely.

Isn't it sad when a country is so repressed by its government that it can't live up to its potential? You see that everywhere, and unfortunately, it probably won't stop anytime soon.  :-/

Going abroad is probably the best solution for anyone who is fed up with the States because, as you mentioned, it usually makes a person grateful for everything that is available to them here. It's one of those "don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" kind of things. Sometimes, it's too easy to take something for granted and never fully appreciate its value until you suddenly find yourself without it.

I hope that your mission reflected the need for love and prosperity to succeed greed and corruption.

Thank you all for the welcome home  ;D

During our teaching and conversations we had to watch our expressions -- we developed code words and hand signals when we said something that would not be understood by the Ugandans (unless they had been to the US, or possibly Europe).  Our code was "third base"  from the Abbott and Costello baseball routine.  For example if one of us would refer to an elevator ??? we'd motion to the left and/or say "third base" as elevators are unknown in most of Uganda.  Then we'd have to re-word our statement to make it understandable.  The code was also not understood as baseball is an American sport ::)

I also found out why women wear skirts or dresses and not pants or shorts in these countries  :P  Trust me, skirts and dresses are much more practical  :-X :-[ :o

My hair is only about a 1/2" longer than 2 months ago.  I think the travel stress is showing.  But that's okay.  I'm enjoying this hair length, it finally feels like I've got long hair again! 8) ;D :D

Thanks khrome!
You know all that tea is picked by hand, "one tiny little tea leaf at a time".  I thought that was just some Madison Ave hype, but it's true.  Thank you to all those tea pickers -- I really enjoy my tea!
