Title: Geisha Hairstyles
Post by bikerbraid on Apr 25th, 2006 at 3:00pm
I recently saw Memoirs of a Geisha.  I was looking forward to seeing the hairstyles that had been described in the book.  I was a bit disappointed by the movie's hair, but still loved the movie.

I have since run across this site, Immortal Geishawhich shows a number of hairstyles.  I cannot imagine doing these styles with my fine, prone to tangle hair.

I'm happy you liked the movie!  Yes the hairstyles were changed to be more chic and were not what Geisha and Maiko wore.  Oh yeah, I have tryed those styles and you need not only stronge hair but more then two hands! ::)  Plus, lots of rats were used and wax to hold it all together.  Many Geisha, when they were just Maiko's, went bald at the top of there heads from the big tight buns they would wear.  I post at IG, there some very interesting articals and conversations there ;)

I try not to adopt the stereotypical asian things like symbols or house decorations because I feel guilty about not being asian but trying to adopt the pretty parts of their culture, so I dont, but I a secretly IN LOVE with Geisha.  I have always wnated to do my hair in the way they do, or dress the way they do.  If I were born Japanese, I would probobly be Geisha, lol.  I think that's why I love hair addornments so much as well.  They are just so beautiful.  Living artwork.

Oh, I was looking forward to it too, BB!  Reading the book was great, and I was expecting to see it played out perfectly in the movie (but you know, a movie always has to go and ruin a good book.. at least, that's been my experence.. *points finger at "Hannibal"*).  I did see what the author was talking about a bit when she said the maiko hairstyle was made so that the bun in the back looked like a dumpling... there are periods when you see maiko with the bun half woven with usually a red and gold fabric print.. looks kinda like a red bean paste dumpling... mmmm dumplings! *nam!*

Me too, Tara, me too!

In fact, last Halloween I dressed up AS a Geisha.. had this short pink Kimono with the long sleeves, wore a pair of my LL hairsticks plus some crystal hair toys, and I even had a pair of wood geta-style flip flops that I put on once my heels got to bothering me too much.  LOL!  I even had a paper-wax parasole that was pink with little blue flowers...   Yes, I'm so obsessed..
