Title: Hairdresser ruined it
Post by leelah on Apr 3rd, 2006 at 9:31pm
A year ago I had really long light blonde hair. I wanted to go a bit darker and see if I liked it. Non-permanant. The hairdresser dyed it dark brown. I came back later that week and she did highlights. It turned RED. I HATE red hair. So I came back again, she highlighted it again but had "Colorgraphics" bleach on my hair for over 4 hours. She used foils that she had to cut up herself as she was doing my hair so the entire right side is ate up and melted away. The whole top of my head is burnt off. I had hairs only an inch long if that.

The color was gross too it looked auburnish. And felt like the end of a broom and the hair was stretchy like cotton-candy. I left it alone for an entire year, took hair vitimins from GNC used WELLA liquid hair reconstructor, WELLA Biotouch conditoners/polishers. And it grew about 5 inches or so. But I had dark roots now. Other than that it looked good. It finally layed flat on the sides and didn't stick out. It was broken off above my ears so it stood straight out. Even though it was to the middle of my back all the hairs were broke off real short so it looked like I was a cancer patient.

So here I was last month with my hair looking like it used to again, smooth, long, healthy. I went to a "REGIS" salon and asked for a color specialist or senior stylist. She wanted to give me highlights but I said no cause I like all over color. I had dark roots, with a redish gold band, then ashey blonde streaks from the highlights last year in the middle on down. So had 3 colors. I wanted her to color my roots to match the band, then dye the streaks on down with a dark blonde matching the top.

Instead, she dyed my whole head gold/blonde. I told her my hair turns red easy but she insisted saying I have to to get the ashey color out the ends. My roots (about 5 inches) turned bright gold/orange, it looks like somebody dumped a can of speghetti O's on my head. Then, the rest is a yucky dark hoosier Jerry Springer trailer park goldish red.

And worst of all, besides this color is, it's now broke off again. I'm back where I was last year. So I cut off all my hair cause there just wasn't anything there. It's all burned off cause she lightened it even more over damaged hair. But it didn't lighten it just locked in that amber/auburn crap. I don't have a pic of my new trailer park hair but I have on of how it was last year when I USED to do it myself and it was the healthiest it had ever been. But as soon as I started going to "PROFESSIONALS" it turned to hay. AND it's now shoulder length and poofy. I couldn't even brush it for 3 days when she was done. I'm doing intense conditoners WELLA again, taking vitimins, and babying my hair. I'm never going to a hair salon ever again. I'm letting it grow out, then I'll color it myself like I always used to. Why do hair salons do this?

I live in southern IL so maybe that has something to do with it. The girls all start the conversation out the same way. And I quote "do you know Panteene has floor wax in it?" Did all you retards go to the same school? Or what? Has anybody else experienced this with a salon?

I tried to add a pic but it's taking me to another site with my url, so you just have to imagine sorry.

I feel your pain.  I've had my hair ruined by a salon - I wore a wig for several months as I was almost bald from a perm that melted my hair right off my head.

I hope you spoke with the manager of the salon about the services you received.  Although they may not be able to do anything for  you now, they should know what a dissatisfied customer you are.

It sounds like you are doing the best you can with what you have.  Be gentle with your hair, deep condition it and if at all possible - try to stop coloring it!

Good luck!

Oh, geez, that sounds terrible! I haven't had an experience where my hair melted off, but I really feel for you. I hope you don't go through something like that again.

Leelah thats horrible. I had a similar story that happened to me last year, but without the coloring just a horrible cut. >:( Hopefully it will grow out  and learn your lesson like i did, never step foot into a salon again. One of my friends told me that women hairstylists are very jealous and when they see a head of gorgeous hair they cant handle it and mess it up.  I know it sounds sick but it could be true. A hairstylist told my sister a while ago that she never does her clients hair better than her own hair. :P

What colour is your hair naturally? If I`d had all your dyeing experiences, I`d be tempted to keep my natural colour untill all the damaged stuff had grown out, then start again with a full head of virgin hair.

I remember going for what we called a "demi-wave" when I was in my late teens. It was supposed to give body to fine hair, not curls. She wrapped the rollers too tight and lots of hair broke off. The salon manageress tried to tell me it was because my hair was damaged with colouring and previous perms that I hadn`t told them about, but I`d never had either and stood my ground.

I was really, REALLY pissed off, even though my hair was in a chin length bob. I certainly wasn`t going to pay for it and eventually I left with enough haircut vouchers to pay for every haircut I was going to need in the year it took me to grow out the mess.

I hope you at least got a couple of free treatments out of your hairdresser? It`s amazing what they`ll give a dissatisfied customer who insists on standing in the middle of the salon for an hour or so repeating her legitimate complaint in a clear and penetrating voice.

How awful for you!  I feel your pain.  Well I'll tell ya comin from New York;if a stylist did that, not only would she have to sleep with one eye open at night for a while, her reputation as a so called stylist would be ruined.  I don't let women touch my hair.....i agree with Curlygirl about the jealous hair thing.  It takes a real stylist to do a wonderful job,translation-in NYC the haircuts run about $120 and higher.  Thank god I only need a trim!!!
I don't want to scare you about NY people,we are really nice, but do the right thing by us and we'll do the right thing by you! :)

That makes sense. All the hairdressers have really super short hair that's all fried with wild colors. Like the "MEANT" to do it. Nobody has long hair at all. I love watching the show "Blow Out" with Johnathan cause his stylists all have cute hair and even some with long locks. I didn't get a refund cause I had to sign a piece of paper stating it was already damaged. She said but don't worry you're gonna love it and this product is really weak it won't hurt your hair. Well, it did. If it's in a ponytail, all the hair on top sticks out I have to put it in barrettes to make it lye down. It's broke off up to my ears. And she had the balls to say, wow it looks great! You should of seen it when I left, I had a fro. SHe had to rip through it was a comb it was so mangled. Ya lady, what an improvement. This was the third h. dresser I went to in the past year. The second time was when it was dyed darker. I should of done it myself cause I knew what I wanted and didn't get it. I'd of still had long hair too.

I'm so sorry to hear that. But, as others have already said, the truth is that most hairstylists don't have any idea on how to treat long hair or hair of someone who states that she wants to grow her hair long. :-/

I used to have a very good stylist, but once I joined here, I realized that she still damaged my hair. I decided to go stylist-free. I've now been taking care of my own hair (well, spouse helps a little with trimming) for over a year. My hair has never been better, and I've been surprised over and over again how easy and cheap it is.

My hairstylist has long hair herself and so does her boss. I cannot complain about these two ladies. Matter of fact they are asking me what I am doing with my hair, cause it is so shinny now. I told them about LL and all the good advice here..........
I go religiously every 6 weeks to get my ends dusted....at least until all of my layers below shoulder length. Then I might start doing this myself.  At my last appointment I was complaining about my hair adding more and more grey into it......and aquiring about coloring it, both of those ladies were all over me : "we are not coloring your hair. It is so beautiful and shiny, you hardly have any grey anyway.......ladidaduda" The end result? I am not dying it.  :)

Good for you, Moonchild!  You will learn to appreciate each and every one of those grey hairs!  They are marks of wisdom and maturity.  ;D

(And congrats on the compliments on your hair.  Getting a compliment from a stylist is quite a feather in your cap.  Maybe you can get them to come visit here and join in the fun!).
